Global Student Support Advisor

Objective:
York International provides a range of programs and services to a diverse population of international students, scholars, and recent permanent residents.
These initiatives facilitate a smooth transition to York University and life in Canada, fostering resilient and inclusive communities that promote student success.
In collaboration with various faculties and the Division of Vice Provost Students, as well as other service providers, York International is dedicated to ensuring that all students can engage fully in university life, connect with supportive communities, and participate in activities that enhance their personal, academic, and professional growth.
Under the guidance of the Director of International Student and Scholar Services, this position serves as the primary resource for providing information, support, and advice to students and visiting scholars regarding Canadian immigration matters. This includes assistance with entry into Canada, study permit and visa applications, various work permits, permanent residency, citizenship, and taxation issues for foreign nationals, while advocating on their behalf when necessary.
The role involves delivering accurate and timely information to a varied audience and directing student inquiries to appropriate internal and external service providers.
Additionally, this position coordinates services and offers guidance to refugees, domestic students, and unique international student programs. Responsibilities include planning, delivering, and coordinating workshops that inform students about relevant government regulations and policies concerning Citizenship and Immigration in Canada.
The role also entails developing an embedded service delivery model to effectively reach students within their academic environments.
It is essential to maintain up-to-date immigration information for international students and ensure the accuracy of this information on the university's website and related publications.
Staying informed about updates, news, programs, and policies from Citizenship and Immigration Canada is crucial, as is sharing this information within the department and the broader university community.
This position functions as York University's authority on immigration policies and regulations affecting students, fostering collaboration with both internal and external partners to provide seamless and knowledgeable services.
Establishing a high level of professionalism and developing partnerships within and outside the institution is vital. Participation in programs and events organized by York International is expected, which may include attendance during non-standard hours.
Engagement in discussions and information sharing within the national Student Advisory network (SACE) and related activities of the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) or other professional associations in immigration is also part of the role.
Qualifications:A university degree and/or a combination of education and experience is required.
Possession of an Immigration Consultant Certificate (in good standing with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) as a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) or Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA)), or being a lawyer or paralegal in good standing with a provincial or territorial law society is mandatory, along with a comprehensive understanding of immigration legislation, including the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and its regulations (IRPR).
Experience:A minimum of five years of relevant experience, particularly in working with international students at the post-secondary level, is preferred. Experience in designing and conducting effective educational workshops, as well as in program development, implementation, and evaluation, is highly valued.
Experience in intercultural environments, whether through work or living abroad, and fluency in additional languages (such as Mandarin or French) besides English is advantageous.
Experience in managing the development of publications is also considered an asset.
Skills:
Ability to stay current with evolving immigration legislation and interpretations, as well as best practices in the field of immigration. Proficiency in interpreting immigration legislation, university policies, and procedures is essential.
A solid understanding of the transition challenges faced by international students and the types of support they require is crucial. The ability to work effectively with diverse student communities and promote inclusivity is necessary.
Strong interpersonal skills and intercultural sensitivity are vital, along with the demonstrated capacity to guide effective intercultural development.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are required, as well as exceptional client service orientation and customer focus. A high degree of initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously are essential.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate within a team to provide integrated service delivery, along with a commitment to student success and the capacity to manage a demanding workload, is expected.
