Waste Management Facility Attendant

Job Summary: The Waste Management Facility Attendant is responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of the Transfer Station at the City of Whitehorse. This includes providing information and education to customers, inspecting waste for compliance with regulations, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
Key Responsibilities:- Waste Inspection and Compliance: Inspect commercial and residential waste loads for compliance with regulations, calculating and communicating applicable fees as required.
- Customer Education and Support: Provide information and education to customers on proper waste segregation practices and direct them to appropriate disposal/recycling areas.
- Facility Maintenance: Organize and maintain the Transfer Station, including receiving and consolidating household hazardous waste.
- Reporting and Data Management: Record and document infractions, manage compliance data, and prepare reports.
- Public Safety and Security: Report clearly visible bylaw infractions to supervisor and/or Bylaw Services, and provide traffic control at the Waste Management Facility as required.
- Physical Labour: Perform labouring duties such as sweeping, shoveling, lifting, packing, hauling, digging, and moving objects.
- Community Outreach: Distribute City of Whitehorse informational pamphlets as required.
The successful candidate will work five 8-hour shifts per week, Sunday to Saturday, in a fast-paced environment with exposure to all types of solid waste, dirt/dust, potentially harmful chemicals, odours and fumes. The position requires working on uneven ground, lifting heavy items, and interacting with the public.
Required Qualifications:- Education: Grade 12
- Driver's License: Class 5 Driver's License
- Experience: 1-year previous related experience and 3 months on-the-job experience
- Skills and Abilities: Strong interpersonal and conflict management skills, thorough knowledge and understanding of waste management practices, ability to work with little supervision, and standard First Aid including level C CPR
Additional certification required within one year of employment includes: Transportation of Dangerous Goods, WHMIS, Hazard Assessment and Control, Traffic Control Course. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
