Job Overview

The Railway Track Technician plays a crucial role in the upkeep of rail infrastructure by conducting inspections, repairs, and replacements of tracks, ties, switches, and ballast materials. This position requires outdoor work in diverse weather conditions while ensuring adherence to safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect and maintain CN's railway tracks, ties, switches, and ballast through thorough examination, repair, and replacement.
  • Utilize and maintain various hand tools essential for the assigned tasks.
  • Remove and replace faulty ties, rail spikes, and anchors as needed.
  • Address and repair irregularities in track surface, alignment, and gauge.
  • Assist in the installation and repair of street and railroad crossings, including power-operated switches and insulated joints.
  • Unload ballast and distribute track materials efficiently.
  • Sort and prepare used track materials for transportation.
  • Ensure the railroad right-of-way is free from obstructions such as brush, vegetation, snow, and debris.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to CN's safety policies and procedures.

Working Conditions

  • Work may involve shifts and occasional overtime as required.
  • Frequent travel, including overnight stays, may be necessary.
  • Most tasks are performed outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Physical demands include repetitive activities and the ability to lift and carry weights up to 50 pounds regularly, and up to 70 pounds occasionally.

Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in similar working conditions or within a regulatory and safety-focused environment.
  • Proficiency in operating heavy machinery and equipment.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must meet all medical fitness requirements for the position, including safety standards.
  • Ability to work independently, adapt to various situations, and manage stress effectively.
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to maintain positive interactions with colleagues.
  • Commitment to achieving high standards of quality, safety, productivity, and client satisfaction.
  • Demonstrated common sense and sound judgment.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and grasping skills.
  • Welding skills and knowledge of signals or Railroad Operating Rules are considered assets.

Training

The selected candidate will undergo a comprehensive training program lasting four weeks, with 40 hours of instruction per week. This training focuses on health and safety regulations as well as fundamental machine operation procedures. Successful completion of this training is mandatory to qualify for the role of Railway Track Technician.

This position is part of a unionized workforce, with pay and benefits governed by the applicable collective agreement.
