Role Overview:
This role requires proficiency in the safe operation of various heavy machinery utilized in highway maintenance tasks. A Highway Maintenance Worker/Operator is tasked with ensuring the upkeep of highways, managing equipment operations, and performing physically demanding tasks as necessary to fulfill the Highway Maintenance Program in accordance with contractual obligations.

Emergency Response:
Ensure proper signage and traffic control measures are established. Respond to emergency situations, including weather-related incidents, wildlife encounters, and accidents, as outlined in training modules and relevant specifications.Operational and Labor Tasks:
Operate machinery and perform labor-intensive tasks for snow and ice management, roadside upkeep, road surface maintenance, traffic control, bridge upkeep, and general highway maintenance. Inspect, maintain, and operate equipment to meet company standards, promptly reporting any issues. Ensure that vehicles, equipment, facilities, and keys are secured according to company policies.Job Documentation:
Demonstrate versatility in operating various heavy machinery and a willingness to learn. Complete necessary documentation, including fuel logs, schedules, road reports, maintenance records, equipment repair requests, and safety documentation.Environmental Compliance:
Understand and comply with the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) standards for maintenance facilities. Conduct all operations in an environmentally responsible manner, adhering to company policies and OH&S regulations. Ensure safe handling of hazardous materials relevant to the role.Working Conditions:
Prepare for long hours and continuous service during winter months. Be available for significant shift work, including on-call and night shifts. Navigate poor visibility conditions while performing snow removal. Plan and coordinate work shifts and call-ins effectively.Summer Operations:
Engage in long hours of outdoor work on highways. Be prepared for significant shift work, including on-call and night shifts. Work in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, wind, and rain; ensure readiness with proper hydration and protective gear.Safety Protocols:
Ensure all work is conducted safely and responsibly, following Alberta OH&S Regulations and Safety Management guidelines. Take corrective action when safety procedures are not adhered to.Ideal Candidate Profile:
Qualifications & Experience
Valid Class 1 (preferred) or Class 3 driver's license with air endorsement. Clean and valid driver's abstract. Minimum of 50 hours of experience operating snowplows. Experience and aptitude for operating and performing minor maintenance on light, medium, and heavy machinery. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks. Valid Standard First Aid Certificate (preferred). Must reside within a reasonable distance from the assigned work location.Note: We prioritize a safe work environment and have a substance testing program in place.
