Overview:

The Sisters of Instruction of the Child Jesus (SEJ) are a Roman Catholic Congregation of Religious women dedicated to serving the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Established in Canada in 1896, the Congregation was invited by Bishop Paul Durieu, OMI to support the Indigenous communities in British Columbia.

In alignment with the vision of their foundress, Anne-Marie Martel, the sisters strive to foster an awareness of God's loving presence and respond to the movement of God's Spirit in their lives. Their core mission encompasses education, healthcare, counseling, and personal development.

Primary Function of Position:

Under the direction of the Treasurer, the Chief Financial Officer is tasked with the strategic planning, organization, direction, control, and evaluation of the financial, accounting, and administrative functions of the Congregation in Canada. This role encompasses business strategy, budgeting, forecasting, and contract management. It is a leadership position that demands initiative, integrity, self-management, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively. Familiarity with civil and canon law is also essential.

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned business professional with a strong background in non-profit accounting and administration.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Design and implement an organizational framework to effectively achieve the goals and objectives of the Congregation as it refines its Canadian mission.
  2. Collaborate with the Congregation's Leadership Team to define short and long-term objectives, policies, and operational procedures.
  3. Develop and enforce internal financial controls and accounting policies, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  4. Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, budgets, and reports in line with generally accepted accounting principles for non-profit organizations.
  5. Prepare comprehensive multi-year financial forecasts, including actuarial studies.
  6. Authorize expenditures within the limits established for the CFO.
  7. Monitor investment portfolios and associated transactions, liaising with relevant investment firms as necessary.
  8. Provide leadership and management for Finance Office personnel, offering training and mentorship in financial and administrative policies to enhance performance.
  9. Participate in bi-monthly Leadership Team meetings related to financial matters.

Position Requirements:

  • University Degree in Accounting or Finance (or equivalent)
  • Professional Accounting Designation
  • Extensive experience in accounting and finance within the non-profit/charity sector
  • Experience in supervising and training staff
  • Knowledge of CRA reporting and receipting requirements for charities
  • Proficient in accounting software, word processing, databases, spreadsheets, bookkeeping, email, and internet research
