Position Overview:

The University of Toronto is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Sessional Instructional Assistant for the course Foundations in Effective Academic Communication. This course is specifically tailored for English Language Learners and aims to enhance essential skills in critical thinking, reading, writing, and oral communication.

Course Objectives:

This interactive course is designed to expedite the development of students' academic skills through a focus on writing and vocabulary enhancement. Participants will engage with university-level texts and gain insights into assignment expectations, fostering a supportive learning environment that encourages active participation and collaboration.

Estimated Enrolment: 40 students

Number of Positions: Up to 2

Appointment Details:

  • Size of Appointment: 70 hours
  • Compensation: $52.26 per hour + 4% vacation pay

Key Responsibilities:

The Sessional Instructional Assistant will:

  • Develop engaging instructional materials that promote dynamic learning experiences.
  • Provide constructive feedback to foster students' confidence in academic communication.
  • Lead in-person practicum sessions, facilitating a collaborative learning community.
  • Conduct office hours and assess student performance through various assignments and presentations.
  • Encourage active participation in discussions and peer interactions.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • A Master's degree in a relevant discipline.
  • At least 3 years of university-level teaching experience.
  • Proven ability to support multilingual students in developing academic communication skills.
  • Experience in teaching writing and providing individualized support.
  • Strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to create an engaging learning environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience in online teaching environments.
  • Training in writing, education, or applied linguistics.
  • Involvement in research related to second language writing.
  • Familiarity with educational technologies such as Canvas and web conferencing tools.
