Electrical Design Engineer - Traffic and Lighting Systems

Our client, a reputable engineering consultancy, is focused on delivering exceptional engineering, operational, and management services. As a successful candidate, you will collaborate with the transportation and electrical divisions to create designs for traffic control systems, roadway illumination, and related civil engineering works. This role necessitates a strong technical foundation in traffic signal systems and roadway lighting, particularly for transportation infrastructure design and construction components for various projects.


Key Experiences to be Gained in the Transportation – Electrical Division:

Building and managing relationships with internal and external clients, including participation in business development initiatives and proposal preparation. Effectively communicating with clients and team members (Engineers, Architects, Designers, and Project Managers) during the design and specification development of electrical, lighting, and traffic signal systems. Leading and contributing to the successful design, production, and coordination of electrical, lighting, and traffic signal systems projects. Engaging in professional development activities to foster individual growth. Supporting the overall advancement of the Transportation – Electrical division.

Responsibilities Include:

Delivering engineering and design solutions for electrical systems within both small and large-scale multidisciplinary projects for public and private sector clients, including Lighting, Traffic Signals, and Joint Utility Trench designs. Developing schematic and detailed design drawings. Providing technical and administrative support throughout all project phases, from proposal to construction. Conducting periodic site visits to assess existing conditions, identify conflicts, and offer support during construction. Performing lighting analysis using AGi32 software. Preparing contract documents, including specifications and cost estimates. Creating post-construction record drawings. Reviewing shop drawings. Offering field support, including commissioning and site inspections. Mentoring junior staff members.

Required Qualifications:

Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering with a focus on roadway lighting and traffic signal design. At least 5 years of design experience, preferably within the consulting sector. Familiarity with relevant regulatory standards (e.g., TAC, ESA, IMSA, AODA, RP-8, Ontario Traffic Manuals, OPSS, Highway Traffic Act, PHM-125 Legal Plans). Experience coordinating utility contacts and assessing conflicts. Proficiency in AGi32 and AutoCAD software. Ability to calculate tender item quantities and prepare construction cost estimates. Experience in preparing pavement marking and roadway signage plans. Strong understanding of Ministry of Transportation of Ontario and municipal projects. Familiarity with MicroStation, AutoTurn, and SPIDAcalc is considered an asset. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. A valid Ontario Driver's Licence – Class G and access to a personal vehicle for business purposes.
