Opportunity Overview:

In alignment with the mission and values of Alberta Health Services, the Environmental Services Worker I (ESI) plays a crucial role within the Environmental Services Team. This position entails routine cleaning, waste collection, and maintenance of the facility, alongside specialized cleaning tasks in critical areas such as operating rooms and pharmacies. Adherence to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards is mandatory. The ESI is also tasked with various related responsibilities as needed. Daily activities are designed to ensure a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for patients, residents, visitors, and staff. Confidentiality and respect are paramount in all interactions. The ESI will assist in training and orienting new staff members and undertake additional duties as required, all while working independently in a dynamic and fast-paced setting.

Key Responsibilities:

As an Environmental I, your role will encompass a range of routine tasks related to the cleaning and sanitization of both clinical and non-clinical healthcare spaces. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors.
  • Restocking supplies in restroom facilities.
  • Stripping linens and remaking beds.
  • Replenishing cleaning supplies and linens.
  • Identifying and reporting potential hazards to your supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have completed Grade 10 or an equivalent level of education. Proficiency in computer usage, including Microsoft Office, is essential. The ability to stand and walk for extended periods, along with performing repetitive tasks throughout the shift, is required. Physical capability to lift, push, and pull weights up to 22 lbs is necessary.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English is essential. The role demands moderate to heavy physical exertion, which may involve prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling, or lifting. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn for extended durations, including face masks, eye protection, gloves, and gowns.

Preferred Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent is preferred. Flexibility to work on holidays, weekends, and various shifts is advantageous. Basic computer skills and prior cleaning experience are desirable. The ability to perform cleaning duties in isolation areas such as Emergency Departments, Operating Rooms, Intensive Care Units, and Neonatal Intensive Care Units is a plus. A WHMIS certificate is also preferred.
