Litigation Counsel in Insurance Sector

Key Responsibilities
- Delivering legal insights and guidance in litigation, concentrating on specialized insurance lines, claims of professional negligence, and litigation in construction, alongside other areas such as insurance coverage concerning municipal liability, police liability, occupier's liability, liquor liability, property insurance, and product liability.
- Collaborating with partners to manage litigation and coverage cases, overseeing the process from initial evaluation, pleadings, motions, discovery, through mediation, pre-trial, and trial stages.
- Evaluating legal and factual matters and providing counsel to clients.
- Participating in examinations for discovery.
- Drafting correspondence for opposing counsel and clients.
- Nurturing relationships with insurers and insured parties.
- Reviewing documentation in preparation for litigation.
- Filing submissions to the court.
- Representing in court, either independently or alongside partners, to argue motions, and attend pre-trials and mediations.
- Assisting with or independently preparing for trials or other adjudicative hearings.
- Engaging in events hosted by the Ontario or other Canadian Bar Associations for professional and business development.
- Undertaking certain responsibilities related to the management of legal practice.
- Continuously enhancing personal skill sets.
- Addressing other related business requirements or priorities as they emerge.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Graduate from an accredited University / Common Law School with a valid license to practice law in Ontario (member in good standing with the Ontario Bar).
- 2-3 years of post-qualification experience in civil litigation and coverage.
- Relevant background in professional indemnity, including experience with design professionals, engineers, insurance brokers, and accountants, with trial exposure.
- Outstanding legal writing and communication abilities.
- Strong judgment and legal reasoning, along with excellent analytical skills and creativity in problem-solving.
- Proven capability to formulate strategies, present clear plans to clients, and convey instructions accurately and thoroughly.
- Established advocacy skills.
- High standards of integrity and intellectual rigor.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Entrepreneurial mindset and a strong interest in cultivating client relationships.
- Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.
