Position Overview:
As a vital member of a multidisciplinary chronic disease management team specializing in bariatric and diabetes care, the Clinical Psychologist I plays a crucial role in delivering psychological evaluations and assessments to individuals facing chronic health challenges such as obesity and diabetes.
Employing an educational framework, the psychologist is expected to share insights, address challenges, and collaboratively develop personalized treatment strategies with the inter-professional team.
The psychologist is responsible for applying evidence-based practices and conducting thorough analyses of clients' psychological needs to ensure optimal support for individuals with obesity.
As part of the inter-professional team, the psychologist is also expected to uphold clinical and professional standards while collaborating with colleagues to synchronize professional activities.
This position supports both the bariatric and diabetes clinics and may extend to assist other clients managing chronic conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct psychological assessments and provide counseling services.
- Collaborate with primary care physicians and specialists to ensure comprehensive care.
- Exercise decision-making and independence in delivering safe and effective care.
- Advocate for patients and their families.
- Engage in quality management by collecting data to monitor client outcomes, ensuring adherence to policies.
In addition to a competitive salary, Alberta Health Services offers a Remote Retention Allowance, providing up to $3,000 annually, which is non-pensionable and paid hourly for all hours worked at the base pay rate.
Job Responsibilities:
As a Clinical Psychologist I, you will collaborate with teams to deliver a variety of standard psychology services to patients and their families, adhering to established standards, directives, and policies.
You will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to plan and implement services that align with best practices and ethical standards.
Your contributions will include providing insights into psychological factors, barriers, and dynamics that affect client treatment planning, engagement, outcomes, and team collaboration, as well as consulting with teams and community services.
Your responsibilities may also involve supervising psychometrists, provisional psychologists, and master's level psychology students, as well as contributing to program, policy, and procedure development, in addition to participating in formal research projects.

Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Psychology from an accredited university program, with a focus on applied areas relevant to the practice setting.
- Active or eligible for registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a healthcare or related environment, ideally within a large, complex, and diverse organization.
- Understanding and respect for the philosophy of bariatric and diabetes services, self-management, mutual aid, and adult education principles, along with an awareness of the impact of chronic health conditions on individuals and the healthcare system.
- Experience working with diverse and vulnerable populations is advantageous. Skills in community development and engagement are essential. Specialized training in the evaluation and counseling of clients with obesity is preferred. Demonstrated excellence in assessment, organization, and client care skills is required. The ability to communicate findings clearly and accurately is essential. Experience in leading group therapy and collaborating closely with an inter-professional team is necessary. Understanding of disordered eating and emotional eating is beneficial. May involve program planning, development, evaluation, and input into policies and procedures.
