Your Role at MKS Instruments:

As a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer at MKS Instruments, you will be instrumental in the innovation, design, and execution of advanced optical sensor technologies essential for state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing. Reporting directly to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, you will spearhead initiatives that drive product excellence.

Your Contributions Will Include:

  • Overseeing the successful development and operational transition of bespoke optical sensor products.
  • Providing technical direction and collaborating across various teams to ensure design superiority with a strong focus on DFx (Design for manufacturing, assembly, testing, reliability, cost, etc.).
  • Engaging in the advancement of new capabilities, encompassing design, simulation, materials, and processes for next-generation optical sensors.
  • Conducting and managing design evaluations and failure modes and effects analysis.
  • Designing, constructing, and validating fixtures and automated testing equipment that integrate hardware and software for development and prototype validation.
  • Identifying and liaising with external suppliers while collaborating with the internal supply chain to source and qualify new components.
  • Creating and maintaining comprehensive test documentation, including plans, procedures, and reports.
  • Utilizing statistical analysis tools to interpret data and derive data-driven conclusions.
  • Generating and overseeing the production of engineering documentation such as reports, drawings, bills of materials, and assembly instructions.
  • Fostering a culture of intellectual property development.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Over 10 years of relevant experience in the development of intricate mechanical or optical/mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence within a collaborative, cross-functional environment to achieve strategic goals in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary setting.
  • High proficiency in mechanical design, SolidWorks, and mechanical component fabrication along with geometric tolerancing.
  • Knowledge of FEA and experience in thermal simulation and management.
  • Hands-on expertise in the design, fabrication, and validation of automated testing jigs and fixtures.
  • Capability to maintain a broad perspective while paying close attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with optical systems and/or sensors.
  • Familiarity with design for excellence (DfX) methodologies.
  • Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) designation or eligibility.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Capable of performing tasks such as sitting, standing, or typing for extended durations.
  • Commitment to safety to mitigate potential hazards, including heat, cold, fumes, strong magnets, confined spaces, lasers, microwaves, and vacuum/pressure systems.
  • Adaptability to work in a fast-paced environment where tasks and priorities may frequently shift.
  • Excellent time management skills and dedication to meeting deadlines.

Compensation Overview:

Salary Pay Range: $68,500 - $127,100 per year. This range reflects a reasonable expectation of compensation for this role, taking into account various factors such as qualifications, experience, education, training, operational and business needs, and other considerations.
