Your Role
Our Ottawa office is seeking a proactive Senior Electrical Engineer to enhance our expanding, multi-disciplinary team. Key responsibilities include the design of electrical systems such as power distribution, essential and life safety systems, lighting, and conducting power system studies. You will prepare proposals and collaborate closely with both internal and external clients, contractors, and suppliers. If you possess excellent communication skills and a strong problem-solving ability with meticulous attention to detail, you will thrive in our dynamic work environment, contributing significantly to a variety of building projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the overall electrical design for projects, ensuring quality while adhering to deadlines, monitoring project scope, and maintaining budget constraints.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to intermediate and junior engineers.
- Facilitate project coordination meetings with team members and external consultants, owners, contractors, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Engage in client project requirement discussions, value analysis, and cost estimation.
- Support and lead technical sections of proposal submissions.
- Develop and manage project scope, budget, design strategies, staffing, and timelines for projects of varying complexities in collaboration with the project manager.
- Evaluate, select, specify, and design electrical systems or products necessary for the project, covering voltages from 120V to 44kV.
- Lead the creation of electrical design deliverables, including single line drawings, wiring diagrams, equipment specifications (transformers, MCC, switchgear, substation equipment), power plans, conduit plans, cable schedules, system studies, and protective relay settings.
- Participate in the design development process through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats, including 3D design tools.
- Coordinate with various engineering disciplines within the project team to ensure effective development of deliverables.
- Contribute to the preparation and coordination of project specifications alongside construction support documents.
- Conduct quality assurance and quality control on personal projects and those of peers.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement by sharing insights and lessons learned.
- Occasional local travel for site inspections and client meetings.
Qualifications
Skills and Credentials
- Self-motivated with extensive experience in navigating engineering design challenges and developing project scope documents, technical reports, cost estimates, and proposals.
- Thorough understanding of design standards and codes applicable to electrical power systems.
- Familiarity with industry standards and principles of electrical engineering design.
- Experience with power systems design and operation ranging from 120V to 44kV.
- Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and Ontario Building Code.
- Collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills and experience in managing and coordinating teams.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, along with strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD is advantageous.
- Experience with ETAP, SKM, and/or EasyPower is beneficial.
- Presentation and interview skills are a plus.
- Experience with Revit and exposure to BIM is considered an asset.
- Interest in green technology; LEED Accredited Professional designation is an asset.
Education and Experience
- B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering; Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario.
- Licensure to practice engineering in Quebec is an asset.
- A minimum of 10 years of relevant electrical engineering design experience is required.
- Experience in electrical design for low, medium, and high voltage systems, including lighting, power distribution, grounding, fire alarm, communications, and security systems.
- Experience with industrial building design is a plus.
