Role Overview
In the capacity of a Blaster Apprentice, you will gain expertise in executing all responsibilities associated with blast site operations under the guidance of a lead blaster. You will collaborate with a dynamic team focused on assisting in the design and layout of drilling patterns. Your responsibilities will encompass:
- Acquiring skills to utilize blast design software, GPS technology, and technical equipment for measuring face burdens, borehole deviations, and grade control as part of the design process.
- Supporting the lead blaster and overseeing all personnel assigned to the blast site.
- Participating in blast site hazard evaluations to guarantee a safe working environment for all team members.
- Conveying all pertinent information to the blast crew, including a comprehensive review of the hazard assessment during safety meetings.
- Ensuring that all equipment utilized in operations is maintained in optimal working condition, including vehicles for transporting explosive materials.
- Adhering to all regulatory requirements, both federally (TDG, Explosives Act, Bulk Regulations, WHIMIS) and provincially (Blasting Safety and OH&S Regulations), regarding personnel operations, product storage, and transportation.
- Keeping an accurate and current inventory of all products, both explosive and non-explosive.
- Ensuring compliance with company policies, safe work practices, hazard analyses, and standard operating procedures among all employees.
Candidate Profile
- High school completion is preferred, with substantial experience in related fields being advantageous.
- Possession of a Provincial Blasting License (minimum enrollment in an apprentice program).
- Proficient computer skills and effective communication abilities in industry-specific terminology, both verbally and in writing.
- A positive, professional, and courteous demeanor is essential when interacting with clients.
- Good physical fitness is required, with the capability to repeatedly handle 25-kilogram units.
- A Class 3 or higher driver's license is beneficial.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory; ability to communicate in French is a plus.
- A friendly attitude, cooperative spirit, and team-oriented mindset are highly valued.
