DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the Medical Laboratory Technologist, the Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for: collecting blood samples from patients of all ages, adhering to established protocols as specified in the laboratory manual; conducting electrocardiograms (ECGs); maintaining quality control, performing routine maintenance, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment used for urinalysis and other tests; preparing and processing specimens for laboratory analysis; coordinating the transfer of specimens to other Lakeridge Health facilities or external laboratories, including Microbiology and Pathology; scheduling patient appointments and managing patient registration; ensuring the cleanliness and organization of the work area; documenting any unusual occurrences involving patients during the execution of duties; adhering to safety and infection control guidelines; and undertaking additional related tasks as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Assistant from an accredited institution;
  • Certification from MLPAO (OSMT) and/or CSMLS as a Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician (MLA/T) is mandatory;
  • Recent experience in a comprehensive MLA role and familiarity with relevant procedures;
  • Proven experience in laboratory assistance, phlebotomy, and ECGs within a clinical or medical laboratory environment;
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time-management abilities;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions;
  • Understanding of infection control standards and practices;
  • Knowledge of WHMIS regulations;
  • Current Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certification is preferred;
  • Physically capable of performing tasks that involve lifting, bending, sitting, walking, and prolonged standing;
  • Proficient computer and typing skills;
  • A satisfactory performance record is required;
  • A demonstrated commitment to the core values of Inclusion, Compassion, Innovation, Teamwork, and Joy;
  • A solid understanding of and commitment to Lakeridge Health's comprehensive safety protocols, including participation in regular training sessions;

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment terms are governed by the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and OPSEU Local 348.
