Job Overview
The Director of Onboard Network and Communication Software Engineering is tasked with creating comprehensive functional designs for subsystem components, whether derived from packaged solutions or custom development. This position collaborates closely with product management, architecture, business operations, and end users to grasp the End-to-End architecture and requirements, subsequently developing a detailed design for specific components or areas of expertise. The incumbent works in tandem with other design teams to ensure a consistent and practice-oriented approach across the entire subsystem. Additionally, the role encompasses involvement in the development, testing, integration stages, leading up to delivery and production support.
Main Responsibilities
System & Software Design
• Develop detailed specifications, design, and software solutions for onboard, network, and communication technologies that constitute CN's advanced mobile data center.
• Facilitate and support the planning, execution, and delivery of various projects or advancements in the product roadmap.
• Innovate solutions by integrating new applications, virtualizing existing products, and evolving technology to support CN's automation roadmap, in collaboration with Product Management.
• Cultivate strong partnerships with Mechanical, Infrastructure, Supplier Management, and support organizations.
• Provide insights into vendor roadmaps to advance technologies aligned with CN's strategic vision.
• Monitor emerging industry technology trends and demonstrate expertise in their application.
• Propose innovative solutions to enhance CN's operational efficiency.
Delivery and Quality
• Collaborate with Project Managers throughout the project lifecycle to identify design, build, quality assurance lab, and field-testing deliverables along with associated estimates.
• Work alongside the Development team to ensure that designs are thoroughly understood and developed to high standards.
• Enforce compliance with all relevant CN Information and Technology (I&T) standards, including Security, Architecture, Project Delivery Methodology, and Software Engineering.
• Define the deployment strategy for software and hardware in collaboration with business units and support Quality and Assurance (Q&A) from a technical subsystem product owner perspective.
• Deliver high-quality executive presentations to senior management and business partners, particularly for project steering committee meetings.
• Commit to and take accountability for project deliverables.
• Manage supplier scope of work in collaboration with supplier management, engaging multiple organizations within CN.
• Track progress and generate status reports.
• Ensure that project deadlines, quality standards, and budget targets are met.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to foster positive interdepartmental relationships.
People Management
• Partner with Human Resources (HR) to attract new talent to the organization.
• Foster a positive work environment through regular coaching and building connections with employees.
• Manage staff workloads and provide creative solutions in a dynamic setting.
• Offer coaching and feedback to team members and set goals that align with team objectives.
• Develop team performance and set direction for employee goals and development, including succession planning and training needs.
• Conduct annual performance reviews for employees.
Working Conditions
This role operates under standard office conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Given the nature of the responsibilities, the incumbent must be capable of meeting tight deadlines and managing pressure effectively. Minimal travel (approximately 10%) may be required.
Requirements
