Job Summary:

The Surgical Aide is a vital member of the Prairie Mountain Health team, responsible for providing exceptional support to the surgical suite. This role requires a high level of attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Transport patients to and from the surgical suite, ensuring their safety and comfort at all times.
  • Assist with transferring patients to and from the surgical table, and back to the stretcher, maintaining a high level of patient care and dignity.
  • Support the surgical team by holding and positioning patients as required, ensuring their comfort and safety.
  • Move equipment within the theatre, ensuring that all necessary items are readily available for the surgical team.
  • Transport patient charts, specimens, and blood products to and from the operating room, maintaining accurate records and ensuring timely delivery.
  • Collect urgent supplies and equipment from other areas of the hospital, distributing them to the surgical suite as needed.
  • Collect soiled linen and supplies from all areas of the surgical suite, sending them to the appropriate departments for processing.
  • Strip stretchers, beds, and chairs after each patient use, maintaining a high level of cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Clean the operating room theatres after each case, adhering to regional policy and ensuring that all equipment and surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
  • Transport soiled case carts to the soiled receiving room, and send them to the Material Distribution Room via elevator.
  • Dispose of fluid from suctions canisters, reassembling them as required.
  • Change circuits and filters on the anesthetic machine, following established protocols.
  • Terminally clean the operating room theatre and recovery room bedsides after an infectious case, maintaining a high level of infection control.
  • Damp dust all areas of the surgical suite, including recovery rooms, to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Stock all warming cupboards with listed solutions and blankets, ensuring that they are fully stocked and ready for use.
  • Clean and fill soap dispensers, maintaining a high level of hygiene and cleanliness.
  • Order supplies as required, ensuring that the surgical suite is well-stocked and equipped to meet the needs of the surgical team.
  • Ensure that sterile products sent up from the Material Distribution Room are properly stored on dedicated carts.
  • Dispose of garbage and linen according to policy, maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Exchange empty oxygen and CO2 tanks, replacing them with new ones as required.
  • Replenish sterile supplies in the operating room theatre, ensuring that they are fully stocked and ready for use.
  • Ensure that there are adequate supplies of scrub brushes, masks, and bouffant hats at the scrub sinks.
  • Ensure that clean operating room scrubs are distributed between both male and female change rooms, and remove soiled scrubs from the change rooms.
  • Follow prescribed surgical suite dress code, wearing personal protective equipment as required for specific duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Care Team Manager or other authorized personnel.
