The Medical Laboratory Assistant plays a crucial role in the healthcare system by ensuring the efficient processing of specimens and providing exceptional support within the laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive and unpack specimens delivered through various channels, ensuring proper handling and tracking.
- Utilize positive patient identification methods to maintain traceability of requisitions and specimens.
- Implement specimen acceptance and rejection criteria in accordance with established laboratory standards.
- Input additional test requests into the laboratory information system and retrieve specimens for further analysis as needed.
- Provide customer service by addressing phone inquiries and resolving issues promptly.
- Prepare and send samples to referral laboratories, ensuring compliance with documentation and packaging protocols.
- Manage the proper storage and disposal of specimens, adhering to retention policies and biohazard waste regulations.
- Conduct quality control testing as required to maintain laboratory standards.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring all devices are functioning correctly and meet quality control measures.
- Review pending specimen reports and investigate any discrepancies.
- Monitor temperatures of refrigerators, freezers, and incubators to ensure optimal conditions.
- Engage in identifying and reporting unexpected occurrences, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Uphold confidentiality standards in line with organizational policies.
- Perform routine laboratory housekeeping, including disinfection of workspaces and equipment.
- Oversee inventory management, applying acceptance criteria and reporting any issues.
- Participate in ongoing education and training activities to enhance professional development.
- Fulfill additional duties as assigned based on training and operational needs.
- May require cross-training in other laboratory areas to meet operational demands.
- Attend to emergency situations as necessary, demonstrating flexibility in work hours.
- Ensure the appropriate disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with safety regulations.
- Actively engage in the laboratory's quality management system and contribute to process enhancements.
- Completion of an Ontario secondary school diploma.
- Graduation from an accredited medical laboratory assistant or technician program.
- Current certification and registration with relevant professional bodies.
- Recent experience in a hospital laboratory setting is essential.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems and office software is advantageous.
- Strong organizational and communication skills are required.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
- Proficient in multitasking and problem-solving under pressure.
- Demonstrated professionalism and productivity in a fast-paced setting.
- Exemplify the values of respect, excellence, service, compassion, innovation, and collaboration.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality are expected.
- Willingness to travel between various sites as needed.
- Knowledge of dangerous goods transport regulations is a plus.
