About Our OpportunityIn the role of NRR Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Forest Technician, you will work under the guidance of the Manager of Forest Protection and report directly to the Forest Health Supervisor. Your primary responsibility will be to support critical assessment and conservation initiatives within a significant multi-year project aimed at safeguarding priority hemlock stands from the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid. This initiative is a collaborative effort backed by Environment & Climate Change Canada (ECCC) through the Federal Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund, focusing on carbon accumulation and biodiversity conservation.
Your duties will include organizing, coordinating, assessing, and reporting on tasks assigned to NRR HWA strike team members, which consist of two Forest Technician 2-3 A-B and four seasonal Assistant Forest Technician 1 A-B's.
Key ResponsibilitiesAs the NRR HWA Project Assistant, your primary responsibilities will encompass:
- Identifying priority assessment and protection tasks related to NRR HWA.
- Utilizing GIS software to pinpoint high-priority hemlock stands.
- Assisting in the planning and coordination of pre-assessment activities to evaluate high-priority hemlock stands for treatment eligibility.
- Facilitating the planning, coordination, and execution of chemical treatments in compliance with safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Conducting fieldwork in challenging and remote terrains, which may involve various hazards.
- Demonstrating the physical capability to manage equipment, including a backpack sprayer with a capacity of 15 L (33 pounds/15 kg).
- Ensuring adherence to pesticide label limits and maintaining safety standards.
- Supporting data collection efforts for pre-assessments and treatments using ArcGIS software.
- Evaluating and enhancing work efficiencies to improve productivity.
- Summarizing and reporting on pre-assessment and treatment outcomes.
- Coordinating efforts among NRR strike team members and HWA partners, including volunteers.
The ideal candidate will possess a recognized Forest Technician training program completion along with 3-5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with forestry practices and pest management is essential, along with technical experience in forestry projects. A provincial pesticide applicator's certificate is required or must be obtained.
Strong physical health is necessary for fieldwork, complemented by excellent teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and a high standard of capability in oral and written communication, time management, organization, and problem-solving are expected.
Independence and minimal supervision are key attributes for success in this specialized role. A valid driver's license is mandatory.
