Position Overview

The Commercial Development Specialist plays a vital role in advancing Spruce Grove's economic development goals, focusing on the retention and attraction of businesses within both the commercial and residential sectors. This position cultivates strong relationships with business owners, land developers, external partners, and various City departments. The Specialist reports directly to the Director of Economic and Business Development.

Responsibilities

  • Business Growth & Attraction
    • Promote and champion business development initiatives within Spruce Grove.
    • Contribute to the development and refinement of economic policies and programs.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for businesses and land developers in the commercial and residential sectors, addressing concerns and fostering a competitive environment.
    • Actively promote and attract multi-family and specialized residential developments (assisted living, senior care facilities) to Spruce Grove.
    • Attract investment and effectively market Spruce Grove as an attractive location for both residents and businesses.
    • Identify available commercial and residential land parcels and provide timely information to businesses and developers.
    • Support existing businesses in promoting their products and services to a wider audience.
  • Business Analysis & Strategy
    • Manage market research, feasibility studies, and strategic plans related to the commercial and residential sectors.
    • Lead initiatives to enhance Spruce Grove's City Centre district, transforming it into a vibrant hub for both business and community engagement.
    • Participate in the preparation of Requests for Proposals (RFPs), Requests for Decisions (RFDs), GIS Maps, and contribute to the department's corporate planning process.
  • Information & Promotion
    • Identify the need for and develop a diverse range of promotional materials to attract businesses and investors to Spruce Grove. This includes community profiles, brochures, website content, videos, trade show participation, and business/economic databases.
    • Maintain the commercial and residential sections of the Economic Development website, ensuring it features an up-to-date database of real estate listings for sale and lease.
    • Manage and update the Sweet Life Found website.
  • Client & Partner Support
    • Engage with regional economic development organizations, other municipalities, business partners, community stakeholders, and internal departments to effectively promote Spruce Grove's economic development goals.
    • Attend economic development-related conferences, workshops, and seminars to stay abreast of the latest industry trends and best practices.
    • Coordinate City involvement in special events aligned with economic development initiatives, such as Public Markets and Winterfest.
    • Represent the Economic and Business Development Department in meetings within City Administration and external stakeholder engagements.

Qualifications

We are seeking a candidate with the following qualifications:

  • A post-secondary degree in Economics, Business, Marketing, or an equivalent field.
  • Five to six years of relevant experience in economic development and business planning.
  • A strong understanding of community economic and business development principles and practices.
  • The ability to effectively manage economic development projects and related planning processes.
  • Proven skills in conducting economic research, market analysis, and feasibility studies.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in municipal government or a similar public sector environment.
