About the Role

Lightspeed is seeking an experienced Assistant General Counsel to join our commercial legal team. As a key member of our leadership team, you will play a crucial role in shaping the company's legal strategy and providing expert advice on complex commercial matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a portion of the commercial legal team and contribute to the development of the company's legal strategy
  • Support the ownership of the commercial contracting process, including contracting with customers, partners, and vendors
  • Implement systems and processes to enhance the scalability and efficiency of the company's commercial legal function
  • Provide expert advice on complex commercial matters and engage in ad hoc analysis for various stakeholder groups
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to stakeholders, including the Procurement, Finance, Sales, Marketing, People & Culture, Product Development, Technology, and Information Security and Information Technology teams
  • Develop, draft, revise, administer, implement, and interpret compliance policies, procedures, and programs
  • Use sound legal and business judgment to make recommendations and solve legal and business problems, often within tight deadlines
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies and government authorities as required
  • Engage and empower colleagues and stakeholder groups through training and thought leadership
  • Assist in managing outside counsel engagements
  • Work on ad hoc projects as assigned
  • Assist with special requests from the executive team

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a law firm and/or as in-house counsel, preferably with a software-as-a-service business
  • Extensive experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating all types of contracts, especially technology contracts
  • Strong leadership skills and experience managing legal teams
  • Creative problem-solving and an innovative approach to in-house law department management
  • Broad commercial and corporate transactional experience gained in a fast-paced, preferably international, environment
  • Professional-level proficiency in English, including legal writing
  • Knowledge of and experience with GDPR, CCPA, and other cybersecurity matters, PCI compliance, and the payment card industry
  • Comfortable communicating with colleagues and stakeholders on different levels and with different professional backgrounds
