Job Summary

This position is assigned to the school-based team to provide support for students with identified special needs. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Principal and under the general direction of a teacher to assist with social, emotional, behavioral, physical, and academic needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate student learning individually or in small groups
  • Document daily progress and assist in the collection of data for the purpose of evaluating student progress
  • Support students in learning social behavior or life skills
  • Support students who have intense, aggressive/non-compliant behavior through the guiding principles of positive behavior support
  • Carry out personal and health care routines, such as assisting with feeding, dressing, toileting, physical support, and lifting
  • Support learning and skill development activities in worksite and community-based settings
  • Provide information to teachers for home/school, formal/informal communications while maintaining confidentiality
  • Monitor and assist students during unstructured time, such as recess, lunch hour, before and after school periods, and between classes
  • Attend meetings as part of the school-based team
  • Use a wide range of equipment, including adaptive technology, augmentative communication devices, and computer software
  • Demonstrate a positive and respectful working relationship as part of a collaborative team
Requirements
  • College of the Rockies SPEDA course; Selkirk College Classroom and Community Support Worker Program and/or equivalent college program or minimum of one (1) year college-level training in the Human Services field with a focus on training in behavior management and students with special needs
  • Ability to work effectively with students and adults
  • Ability to communicate appropriately with other staff members, students, and parents as directed
  • Ability to be part of a collaborative team, maintaining a professional attitude and confidentiality in working relationships with all school personnel, students, parents, and the public
  • Ability to work as part of school-based planning team as required
  • Ability to be flexible and work with minimal supervision
  • May be required to dispense approved medications as prescribed by the student's doctor in accordance with Board Policy No. 310
  • Ability to work with non-compliant students in a non-confrontational manner
  • Training in non-violent crisis intervention will be provided
  • Child-related team requirements and special skills needed will be identified for special assignments
  • May be required to have a valid B.C. (Class 5) Driver's License
  • Must have understanding and knowledge of safe work practices
