Role Overview
The Court of King's Bench serves as the Superior Trial Court within the Province, adjudicating family, civil, and criminal cases, as well as appeals from the Court of Justice decisions.
As a Legal Counsel, you will report directly to the Senior Legal/Executive Counsel or the Director of the Court of King's Bench and will be tasked with:
- Conducting legal analysis, drafting, editing, and providing research support for the judiciary of the King's Bench.
- Offering legal assistance for various Court committees, projects, and initiatives.
- Overseeing the Court's articling students, which includes evaluating workloads, assigning tasks, and managing diverse legal research projects.
You will need to operate both independently and collaboratively with Justices, fellow Legal Counsel, and articling students. The role demands a high degree of autonomy, enabling you to address and advise on standard, non-standard, and intricate legal matters and research tasks while effectively managing competing priorities and workloads.
To excel in this position, you should possess: exceptional research, analytical, and organizational abilities; a comprehensive understanding of the legal principles governing the Court; and substantial knowledge of criminal, family, civil, and administrative law, including Canadian and international case law and legislation. Familiarity with Alberta's Rules of Court, statutes, and case law is essential.
Outstanding decision-making and communication skills (both verbal and written) are necessary, along with proficient computer skills.
Proficiency in French legal terminology (both written and spoken) is considered advantageous for this role.
Required Qualifications
A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) Degree, complemented by the following:
- Civil Crown Counsel 2 (CCC2) requires a minimum of four (4) years of directly related post-bar legal experience.
- Civil Crown Counsel 3 (CCC3) necessitates at least eleven (11) years of directly related post-bar legal experience.
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta or eligibility for membership is mandatory.
Relevant legal experience encompasses extensive use of Canadian legal research tools, well-honed research and analytical skills, and exceptional legal writing capabilities. It also includes prior experience in court or tribunal settings.
A strong academic record is crucial, and an LLM is a valuable asset. Experience in law journals and other legal writing is beneficial and regarded as an asset.
Supervisory experience is viewed favorably. While not obligatory, fluency in French is considered an asset.
