POSITION OVERVIEW
The 3rd Class Stationary Engineer is responsible for executing operational tasks within a central heating and cooling facility in the National Capital Area, reporting directly to the 1st Class Stationary Engineer. Under the PWGSC contract, BGIS provides essential services to federal government entities at various buildings and facilities in the National Capital Region. In this capacity, BGIS delivers certified and skilled Operating Engineers to manage, operate, and maintain diverse registered central heating and cooling plants.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Proficient in the operational characteristics of boilers, chillers, generators, combustion chambers, firing apparatus, water pumps, valves, expansion joints, fans, distribution systems, and auxiliary equipment, including computer systems.
- Knowledgeable in testing methodologies to conduct assessments on mechanical equipment and water samples, ensuring the reliability of plant machinery and adjusting chemical concentrations in water as necessary.
- Capable of starting up and shutting down large oil and gas-fired boilers and generators, adjusting controls to regulate output, performing preventive maintenance, and occasionally replacing parts.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential for troubleshooting activities.
- Familiarity with various computer software applications is required.
- Skilled in conducting standardized tests to ascertain chemical concentrations in water.
- Proficient in using a range of hand and power tools in daily operations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- 3-5 years of experience at the Class 3 level.
- Comprehensive understanding of heating and cooling plant equipment and systems, including familiarity with the operational characteristics of various machinery and systems necessary for providing clients with safe and continuous temperature control.
- General awareness of federal and provincial regulations concerning environmental standards and occupational health and safety in plant operations.
- Administrative skills to prepare work orders and documents, compile operational data for monthly management reports, and draft reports with recommendations.
- Manual dexterity for repairing and overhauling operating plant equipment and extensive distribution systems.
- Strong written communication skills for maintaining shift logs and preparing various reports and documentation, along with verbal communication skills for discussing mechanical issues with colleagues.
Certifications and Licenses
- 3rd Class Stationary Engineer certification is required.
