Position Overview

Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Senior Estimator plays a crucial role in supporting all Pacific Bids & Estimates. This position is responsible for developing competitive pricing proposals by executing estimating functions such as managing bid documents, preparing detailed take-offs for construction initiatives, and conducting thorough research to inform bid submissions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review tender documents and participate in pre-bid meetings to ascertain the scope of work and necessary components of estimates.
  • Analyze tender documents, plans, specifications, and other relevant materials to prepare accurate time, cost, materials, and labor estimates.
  • Manage quantity surveys and take-offs as needed.
  • Create detailed material lists based on tender documents and specifications, forwarding them to the Material Manager for pricing.
  • Incorporate historical data from previous estimates, purchase agreements, and subcontracts to enhance current bid accuracy.
  • Evaluate bids from subcontractors for completeness and accuracy regarding the scope of work.
  • Develop detailed scopes of work for subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Solicit pricing from subcontractors and vendors.
  • Prepare submissions and coordinate activities for bid day with involved staff.
  • Ensure compliance with all tender document requirements.
  • Confirm that all general conditions of the tender document are satisfied, including insurance, bonding, and special requirements.
  • Collaborate with management to strategize on estimating approaches and gather feedback on estimates.
  • Lead the bid review process.
  • Create initial construction schedules and cash flow forecasts.
  • Monitor and track upcoming projects within SharePoint, providing weekly updates.
  • Prepare and present project turnover packages upon contract award.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma plus post-secondary education in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant estimating experience, preferably in the construction or railway sectors.
  • Proficient in reading, understanding, and interpreting drawings and specifications.
  • Strong capability in reviewing contract documents.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong presentation abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively while meeting deadlines.
  • Proficient in utilizing common business and estimating software, including Microsoft Office, Hard Dollar, Explorer, or JD Edwards.

Working Conditions

  • This is a full-time office position.
  • Occasional weekend or evening work may be necessary.
  • Some exposure to outdoor construction sites in various weather conditions may be required.
  • Most fieldwork will occur around live tracks (trains).
  • Work may take place in urban, rural, or remote areas, with accommodations and transportation provided if necessary.
