Overview

Reporting to the Director of Hydro Operations, the Hydro Asset Management Specialist plays a crucial role in enhancing system reliability and formulating cost-effective maintenance strategies within the hydroelectric division. This position involves the comprehensive management of hydro assets throughout their entire lifecycle, including identification, inventory, monitoring, and analysis.

The specialist serves as a supervisor and mentor for team members, which entails establishing objectives, delegating tasks, evaluating, and overseeing individual performance to achieve results for two key roles - Hydro Electrical Field Specialist and Hydro Mechanical Specialist Field Engineer. This role demands a high level of independence, confidentiality, professionalism, and strategic insight.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct continuous assessments and analyses of assets using diverse measurement methods and data sources to inform and support business decisions regarding maintenance, upgrades, or decommissioning of hydro, substation, and backup thermal generation assets.
  • Utilize both internal and external resources to perform inspections and Asset Condition and Risk Assessments (ACRAs). Lead and develop the Project Recognition Forms (PRF) process for Hydro assets, including dams and integrated thermal generation plants, in collaboration with the Projects, Engineering, and Finance Divisions. Plan for community and power system requirements, evaluate performance, risks, and opportunities by contributing to the hydro asset component of the Power System Plan (PSP), incorporating renewable generation technologies as necessary.
  • Assist the Reliability Improvement Committee in prioritizing significant maintenance tasks, reliability challenges, and potential engineering studies.
  • Stay informed about industry best practices and performance benchmarks, applying this knowledge to enhance the development and execution of system-specific maintenance and asset management strategies.
  • Champion the Hydro Division's strategic and tactical maintenance planning, leveraging the Corporation's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to optimize overall business outcomes by researching and implementing maintenance management best practices.
  • Monitor asset performance through Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and recommend adjustments to asset management policies, frameworks, and processes as needed.
  • Serve as a supervisor and mentor for team members, which includes setting objectives, assigning tasks, evaluating, and managing individual performance to achieve desired outcomes. This role requires a high degree of independence, confidentiality, professionalism, and strategic insight.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of eight years of overall experience, including four years in asset assessment and maintenance techniques. Equivalent qualifications may be considered.
  • Eligibility for registration with NAPEGG as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in a relevant discipline is required.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience in overseeing, planning, coaching, developing, and coordinating the work of others. Supervisory experience includes responsibilities such as hiring, assigning work, assessing performance, and administering discipline.
  • Experience in Asset Management within an electrical utility setting.
  • Proficient computer skills (MS Office Suite, MS Project, Outlook, etc.) and the ability to utilize relevant design software.
  • Strong communication and writing abilities.
  • Above-average interpersonal skills and the capacity to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience with the operation and maintenance of assets located in remote areas.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal record check.

The salary for this position ranges from $71.15/hr to $88.93/hr, along with location and accommodation allowances of approximately $8,032 per annum. A comprehensive benefits package is offered, including health and dental benefits, long-term disability, life insurance, paid sick days, and a defined benefits pension plan.
