Poll Workers

Poll workers are essential personnel stationed at voting locations, where citizens cast their votes. Various roles are available, including the deputy returning officer, responsible for managing ballots, and the information officer, who guides voters to the correct tables. During elections, poll workers are pivotal in ensuring that the voting process runs smoothly and efficiently. Élections Canada prioritizes the safety of both workers and voters, implementing health and safety protocols at every voting site.

Special Requirements

Candidates interested in these roles must exhibit the following core competencies:

Basic literacy skills (reading, writing, and comprehension) Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to remain neutral and interact with individuals who may be frustrated Capability to assist voters with disabilities Ability to perform repetitive tasks Basic analytical skills Attention to detail Ability to follow instructions and comply with safety protocols Quick learning ability Willingness to work extended hours (minimum of 13 hours)

Some positions may also require:

Standing for prolonged periods Working near exterior doors, potentially exposed to adverse weather conditions Inspecting the polling location's exterior Completing detailed forms and paperwork legibly Counting ballots (basic arithmetic skills required) Ensuring compliance with safety guidelines and procedures by voters and candidates' representatives

Important Notes:

For advance poll workers: Participation in any partisan political activities is prohibited from the first day of advance polls until after the counting of ballots on election night.

For election day poll workers: Engaging in any partisan political activities on election day is not allowed until after the counting of ballots on election night.

Canadian citizens aged 16 and older on election day are encouraged to apply.

Deputy Returning Officer (Polling Day)

Key Responsibilities

Ensure the polling station opens and closes punctually Prepare the polling area with necessary supplies Verify voters' identification and enforce ID policies Distribute ballots to voters and provide instructions Complete necessary paperwork to document voter participation Ensure adherence to safety guidelines by voters and candidates' representatives Manage the custody of ballots and ballot boxes Count ballots, complete related documentation, and report results to the local Elections Canada office Return ballot boxes and materials to the returning officer or central poll supervisor after counting and paperwork completion

Qualifications Overview

Must be a Canadian citizen Must be at least 16 years old on polling day Experience in handling and recording personal information from the public and completing paperwork Experience in public interaction Experience in conflict resolution Must demonstrate tact and sound judgment Maintain a polite and professional demeanor

Compensation* (Subject to Change)

$18.25/hour plus overtime at a rate of one and a half times the hourly rate for hours worked beyond eight in a single day.

Deputy Returning Officer (Advance Polling Days)

Key Responsibilities

Ensure the polling station opens and closes punctually Prepare the polling area with necessary supplies Verify voters' identification and enforce ID policies Distribute ballots to voters and provide instructions Complete necessary paperwork to document voter participation Ensure candidates' representatives adhere to guidelines Manage the custody of ballots and ballot boxes Ensure safe transportation and storage of materials between voting days and from the last day to election night On election night: count ballots, complete related documentation, and report results to the local Elections Canada office Return ballot boxes and materials to the returning officer as instructed after voting

Information Officer

Key Responsibilities

Assist in setting up and closing the polling location Welcome voters at the main entrance and guide them to the voting area Direct voters to their polling station or registration desk Remind voters to have their voter information card and ID ready, and answer their inquiries Inform voters about any special procedures, including health and safety measures Ensure entry logs are maintained Recognize when a voter may need additional assistance and provide help as necessary Welcome candidates and their representatives and guide them as needed Support the central poll supervisor in maintaining a safe polling environment Ensure the polling location closes at the designated time, allowing voters who enter before closing to cast their votes Assist in counting ballots on election night

Registration Officer

Key Responsibilities

Set up the registration desk and prepare the polling area Explain the registration process and ID requirements Consult the poll key to determine voters' polling division Verify and accept voters' proof of identity and address Register new voters or correct their information and complete relevant paperwork Complete certificates and declarations for the vouching process Ensure candidates' representatives adhere to guidelines Assist in counting ballots on election night

Central Poll Supervisor

Key Responsibilities

Manage the polling location and ensure removal of all partisan materials Ensure the safety of poll workers, voters, and candidates' representatives, including maintaining physical distancing and providing protective equipment Confirm the accessibility of the polling location Ensure polling stations are set up correctly and open and close on time Ensure poll workers arrive punctually Distribute materials to poll workers Relay information between the office and poll workers Supervise poll workers to ensure compliance with procedures and accurate form completion Fill in for absent poll workers as needed Admit candidates' representatives and ensure adherence to guidelines Ensure proper application of the Canada Elections Act Supervise ballot counting Manage the collection and return of ballot boxes and election materials Provide the returning officer with the count results

*All poll workers will receive approximately three hours of training, compensated at the standard hourly rate.

*All hours of work and expected overtime must be pre-approved by the returning officer.
