About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Property Underwriter to join our team at Aviva. As a key member of our Commercial Lines team, you will play a critical role in driving our underwriting strategy and ensuring the quality and profitability of our portfolio.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as an underwriting resource on complex risks, authorizing and reviewing policies within established authority levels.
  • Conduct Underwriting Quality Reviews on commercial and property underwriters, including those with our MGA partner.
  • Oversee the Underwriting Quality Reviews process, ensuring timely completion and effective follow-up.
  • Participate in training and development of underwriting staff, providing technical expertise and advice on products, systems, and processes.
  • Consult with our Central Technical Unit on unique or unusual risks, minimizing adverse risk selection and maintaining portfolio quality.
  • Oversee the Large Loss review process, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of company operations, procedures, and industry trends.
  • Participate in the introduction and communication of pricing, coverage, and product changes.
  • Identify areas of concern regarding loss ratios, risk trends, or other discrepancies.
  • Develop and maintain working knowledge of all Information Systems/Programs within the company.
  • Participate in other audits as required.
  • Contribute to the development of Underwriting guidelines, procedures, and manuals.
Requirements
  • At least 7+ years of experience in Commercial Lines Property & Casualty Underwriting, including complex risks.
  • Post-secondary education (Business or related discipline) or equivalent practical experience.
  • CIP/FCIP preferred.
  • Knowledge of audit processes and methodology.
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting, pricing, and product in key segments, i.e. Wholesaling, Manufacturing, and/or Contractors.
  • Working knowledge of company underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, risk information sources, underwriting/technical manual information, statutory constraints, and computer workflow procedures.
  • Working knowledge of other functional areas, i.e. Claims, Risk Management, Accounting, etc.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word & Excel), RTM, commercial lines computer systems, and other related systems.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner to develop long-term relationships with internal stakeholders and front-line underwriters.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and proactively identify technical opportunities for employee development.
