The selected candidate will oversee and manage law students engaged in the clinic, providing continuous educational support on various aspects of poverty law, courtroom procedures, and case management.

The individual will act in the capacity of the Director and other Review Counsel during brief absences.
This role is specifically for the Tenant Division at the Community Legal Clinic.

Legal Responsibilities:

Represents the Community Legal Clinic and external clients in court appearances and administrative hearings related to the Review Counsel's cases, prepares legal documents, and participates in hearings and other legal proceedings as necessary.

Advocates for the Community Legal Clinic and its clients in all interactions with judicial bodies, tribunals, and external parties.

Clarifies legal matters, rights, responsibilities, and benefits to clients; ensures that all casework conducted by law students adheres to established professional standards.

Supervises students in alignment with the professional benchmarks set by the Law Society of Ontario. Provides training and mentorship to law students on essential legal practices and research methodologies. Educates newly recruited students on all relevant legal aspects pertaining to the Clinic's focus areas.
Engages in the recruitment, selection, and interviewing of students for full-time summer positions and those enrolling in clinic courses.

Educational Contributions:

Designs and delivers legal aid courses each academic year, with a maximum of one course per academic term in the undergraduate program (JD) at the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, as determined by the Vice Deans (French and English), thereby enhancing the academic offerings of the Common Law Section and the Community Legal Clinic.

Innovates and implements effective pedagogical strategies in supervising and advising law students at the Clinic. Cultivates relationships and partnerships with local legal clinics to create quality opportunities for law students. Develops creative solutions for providing accessible services to community clients.

Stays informed on legislative changes affecting the Community Legal Clinic and its clientele, and provides legal guidance on operational, compliance, and policy matters.

Qualifications:

  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Approximately 1 year of experience as a practicing attorney, preferably in poverty law or a clinical legal environment
  • Bilingual proficiency in French and English (both spoken and written)
  • Experience working with law students and diverse client populations
  • Knowledge of clinical legal education and client-centered legal practices
  • Experience in poverty law and/or clinical legal settings
  • Ability to produce high-quality work under pressure while adhering to strict deadlines
