Position Overview

AECOM is seeking a highly experienced and driven Principal Water Resource/Hydrotechnical Engineer to contribute to our expanding operations. This role will involve overseeing multidisciplinary teams throughout the entire project lifecycle, specifically focusing on studies related to mine water management, including water balance considerations for tailings storage facilities (TSF) and hydraulic designs on a national and international scale. You will engage in addressing some of the most intricate challenges within the mining sector.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this role encompass:

  • Leading and managing projects that concentrate on hydrology and hydraulics pertinent to mine development, operational phases, and closure activities;
  • Conducting comprehensive studies to evaluate site conditions;
  • Establishing holistic water and mass balances to inform the design of TSFs, civil engineering projects, and water treatment systems;
  • Overseeing the hydrotechnical aspects of dam safety evaluations for tailings and water retention structures;
  • Facilitating risk assessment workshops for TSFs;
  • Preparing or directing hydrotechnical designs related to water management for mining facilities, flood routing, and overall mine water management strategies;
  • Designing hydraulic structures for mining sites, including detailed construction drawings for collection and polishing ponds, spillways, ditches, weirs, basins, pumping stations, and culverts;
  • Supporting development and permitting processes, including baseline hydrology studies, climate assessments, flow impact evaluations, and low-flow analyses;
  • Conducting breach assessments for mine dams (tailings and water retention);
  • Delivering complex scopes of work that involve technical designs and reviews, collaborating with other technical leads responsible for geotechnical and environmental aspects in alignment with AECOM's Quality Management System;
  • Leading and contributing to proposal development and opportunity management;
  • Adhering to AECOM's Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) policy;
  • Mentoring junior and intermediate staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning;
  • Supporting the advancement of mine water management services.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in water resources or civil/environmental engineering;
  • 8+ years of experience in water resources engineering with a focus on hydrology, hydraulics, and/or water quality;
  • Professional Engineer registration in Ontario;
  • Familiarity with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling techniques and commonly utilized software;
  • Proficient knowledge of HEC-HMS and HAC-RAS software;
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS and CADD software;
  • Experience in proposal development and project management;
  • Experience in client management and business development;
  • Possession of a valid driver's license;
  • Demonstrated commitment to SHE management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in water resources or civil/environmental engineering;
  • 15+ years of experience in water resources engineering with a focus on hydrology, hydraulics, and/or water quality;
  • Expertise in mine water management specifically related to tailings and waste rock facilities, dam safety classifications, and flood routing assessments;
  • Knowledge of the mining industry's water management requirements and relevant regulations;
  • Experience with water balance, hydrology, and flood modeling software such as GoldSim, ARCView, PC-SWMM/EPA, SWMM, VISUAL OTTHYMO, and InfoWorks is advantageous;
  • A collaborative team player with the ability to inspire and lead by example;
  • Strong business acumen, business development skills, and a customer-focused approach;
  • Exceptional leadership abilities with a passion for business growth.
