At Torstar, we are seeking a skilled Reporter to join our team in Peterborough. As a key member of our newsroom, you will be responsible for producing high-quality, trustworthy journalism that informs and engages our community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and write engaging news stories on municipal issues, focusing on community impact and civic institutions.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of Canadian Libel Law and Canadian Press Style.
  • Collaborate with the managing editor to produce interesting and local newsworthy stories in traditional and non-traditional formats.
  • Produce high-quality, engaging multi-media content for our website and social media outlets, including video and audio posts.
  • Travel throughout the community to capture events and information outside of structured work hours, including evenings and weekends.

Requirements:

  • At least one year of experience working in a newsroom environment.
  • Strong interviewing, social media, and online journalism skills.
  • Proven news judgment and a strong work ethic.
  • Photography skills.
  • Ability to work in a virtual newsroom.
  • Must be prepared to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must have access to a vehicle and a valid driver's license.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written (Canadian Press Style).
  • Effective organizational skills, ability to manage time and prioritize tasks appropriately.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Team-oriented individual that can build professional relationships with team members.
