Position Overview:

Hatch is on the lookout for a highly driven electrical technologist with a strong background in electrical design for utility distribution. This role entails being part of a specialized team focused on the planning and design of electrical, automation, protection, and communication systems for electric utility and industrial projects across North America, with a particular emphasis on projects in Ontario.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in a variety of electrical design utility solutions.
  • Plan electrical distribution systems effectively.
  • Produce, evaluate, and provide feedback on designs and schematics for electrical (and related civil asset) utility systems, including distribution, MTS, single line diagrams, general arrangement drawings, and grounding/earthing, lighting/services designs.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory, health, and safety policies, as well as utility procedures and standards.
  • Verify that all drawings and deliverables meet project and utility standards.
  • Implement designs according to the electrical design criteria for the project and established design standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Coordinate all electrical interfaces with designers and engineers from other disciplines.
  • Ensure designs are completed within adequate lead times and adhere to capital budget and KPI requirements.
  • Potential involvement in project and workload decision-making.
  • Participate in field surveys at client locations, which may require considerable walking.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred experience in utility electrical design, particularly with larger Ontario distribution utilities.
  • Proficient in utility pole loading calculations and related software (e.g., SpidaCalc, PLSCADD, O-Calc, etc.).
  • P.Eng licensed in Canada.
  • Experienced with project management and document control tools (e.g., ProjectWise, SAP, Primavera, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of third-party attachment requirements to utility infrastructure.
  • Solid knowledge of CSA 22/04 standards.
  • Good working knowledge of electrical theory and construction practices.
  • Exhibit strong problem-solving abilities and multitasking skills.
  • Preference for a Certified Engineering Technologist designation.
  • Preference for experience in both civil and electrical multidisciplinary utility infrastructure.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
