About This Role

The Mental Health and Addiction Program (MHAP) at the Lunenburg Recovery Support Centre is seeking a part-time physician (0.1 FTE) to join a collaborative clinical team. This role focuses on delivering evidence-based withdrawal management and comprehensive mental health and addiction services in an outpatient setting. The physician will also provide consultative support to primary care providers, emergency department staff, community pharmacists, and inpatient physicians in the management of substance use disorders.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with potential for virtual care options.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and manage substance use disorders.
  • Collaborate with the clinical team to establish and oversee withdrawal management protocols.
  • Assess and address other medical and psychiatric conditions as necessary.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement interventions for self-harm or harm to others.
  • Develop and execute care and discharge plans in partnership with clients, families, and the clinical team.
  • Facilitate transitions of care across various settings.
  • Deliver trauma-informed and culturally sensitive care.
  • Provide brief interventions related to substance use and concurrent disorders.
  • Maintain accurate and timely health records in compliance with documentation policies.
Expected Work Hours

The MHAP Addiction Medicine Consult Service operates Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Rotation among the Recovery Support Center sites will be discussed with the supervising physician.

Qualifications
  • Valid medical license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Current certification in addiction medicine from recognized professional organizations, such as:
    • College of Family Physicians Canada (CFPC) Certificate of Added Competence (CAC) for Addiction Medicine.
    • American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) certification.
    • International Society of Addiction Medicine (iSAM) certification is an asset.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain active credentials and privileges with NSHA.
  • Must maintain liability insurance through the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
Clinical Experience
  • Experience in addiction medicine is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience in a medical withdrawal management service is advantageous; training and mentorship opportunities are available for candidates with limited experience.
