About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Provincial Medical Executive Director, the Department Heads for Family Medicine are jointly responsible for overseeing the operations of the Family Medicine medical staff within the Zone. This role involves strategic and operational planning as well as service leadership in collaboration with relevant administrative department leaders.

The Department Heads provide guidance to the Family Medicine network leads, alongside managing performance and physician resource planning for department members.



Key Responsibilities
1.

Ensure adherence to NSHA Bylaws and Rules and Regulations, including the approval of credentials, managing complex applications, and addressing CPSNS restrictions.

2. Conduct regular departmental meetings and provide minutes to the Provincial Medical Executive Director.
3.

Participate actively in relevant committee meetings such as ZMAC, Clinical Affairs, Zone Council, Network Council, and LTC MAC meetings.

4. Collaborate with Health Services Managers and Leads to co-lead strategic and operational planning and budgeting.
5. Maintain service continuity through effective scheduling practices, including vacation requests, on-call scheduling, and locum utilization.
6. Monitor departmental standards, quality, and resource utilization.
7. Manage performance evaluations for all department members.
8. Address complaints and disciplinary actions for department personnel.
9.

Support the medical education mandate by recruiting physicians for teaching roles, serving on the Dal Medical School Committee, and coordinating medical residents and students.

10.

Engage in clinical services planning and assist in managing various clinics within the zone, advocating for the healthcare system and bridging Acute Care and Community Care.

11.

Lead recruitment and retention initiatives, including identifying opportunities, managing recruitment processes, handling retirement transitions, and addressing the needs of new recruits.

12. Ensure the completion of onboarding processes for new hires, with support from the Specialty Site Lead as necessary.
13. Organize regular IMMR for the Department in collaboration with Organization Performance.
14. Support and implement the Primary Care Strategy, focusing on transformation, modernization, and addressing physician issues within the zone.
15. Participate in leadership development initiatives.
16. Perform all duties with an understanding of EDIRA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Reconciliation, and Accessibility) principles.

Eligibility
⦁ MD licensed in Nova Scotia and privileged with Nova Scotia Health.
⦁ Evidence of past and ongoing leadership training.

Compensation
Each position is 0.5 FTE and individual compensation will be determined based on previous experience.
