Vancouver Island University is seeking a skilled and compassionate professional to support students who face barriers to post-secondary education. As a Financial Aid Access Specialist, you will play a critical role in advancing the university's commitment to inclusive and responsive support.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide individualized support to students from inquiry to graduation, navigating the university system and tracking academic progress.
- Develop and implement initiatives to minimize attrition and maximize retention, particularly for marginalized students.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to provide wrap-around care and connect students with relevant resources.
- Participate in the VIU internal Scholarship, Award, and Bursary selection committee.
- Complete bi-annual reports on student progress and potential areas of concern.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., social work, adult education, psychology, human services, child and youth care) from an accredited institution with a minimum of five years of experience.
- Deep understanding of the barriers faced by vulnerable populations in accessing and completing post-secondary education.
- Demonstrated experience working with at-risk students who have encountered significant academic, socio-economic, and mental health challenges.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team while adhering to tight deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and outstanding oral and written communication skills.
- Master's degree in a related field with minimum of five years of experience working with vulnerable populations in a post-secondary environment.
- Knowledge of BC Colleges, institutes, university systems, programs, and services.
