Canada Canadian Armed Forces Full time

Position Overview

As a key member of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), the Military Anesthesiologist is part of the Medical Specialist role, providing essential emergency resuscitative and anesthesia services to CAF personnel. This role encompasses both domestic and international operations, allowing for leadership opportunities within the CAF Health Services and the chance to mentor a diverse range of military healthcare professionals.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Deliver anesthetic consultations for CAF personnel across Canada.
  • Engage in emergency resuscitation and surgical teams, both within Canada and in international deployments.
  • Provide in-transit medical care for injured or ill CAF members during their evacuation to Canada.
  • Educate and guide multidisciplinary teams on critical areas such as emergency resuscitation, airway management, sedation, and acute pain management.
  • Maintain clinical proficiency by working within civilian healthcare facilities.
  • Contribute to the formulation and implementation of healthcare policies within the CAF.

Work Environment

Military Anesthesiologists in the CAF ensure their clinical readiness by being integrated as staff in tertiary care civilian hospitals throughout Canada, collaborating closely with civilian medical professionals. They may also provide consultative services to support Primary Care Clinicians at CAF Health Services Clinics. Opportunities for education, training, and research are available both nationally and internationally.

As members of the 1 Canadian Field Hospital, they uphold their operational readiness through participation in annual military skills training and field exercises. When necessary, they are deployed to unique and challenging clinical environments as part of a Health Services team during domestic and international missions.

Career Path

Upon successful completion of all required training, individuals in the Regular Force will be assigned to their first base. While there is some flexibility regarding postings, relocations may be necessary at various points in their careers. In contrast, those who opt for the Primary Reserve Force will join a specific Reserve unit, allowing them to work part-time without the obligation to relocate. Typically, Primary Reserve members work one night per week and some weekends, with potential for full-time employment.

Compensation and Benefits

A competitive salary and benefits package is available for this medical specialization, reflecting the unique responsibilities and challenges of the role.
