POSITION OVERVIEW:

We have an exciting opportunity for auxiliary Aquatic Leaders. The Aquatic Leader position is an opportunity for a current aquatic professional to be part of a dynamic team and contribute in many ways to a fast-paced, quick-thinking environment. You will play an important role in the operations and customer experience at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre and the seasonal Hammond Outdoor Pool.

We are looking for candidates who love the water, are interested in further developing their leadership and customer service skills, and are passionate about leading and supporting a new and developing large aquatics staff team.

An Aquatic Leader is a highly responsible and effective leader, who has a passion for community water safety and well-being. An Aquatic Leader has a dynamic day which involves supporting team members with complex public relations, fostering program excellence, overseeing staff in their role as a lifeguard/instructor, and administrative tasks for the overall day-to-day operation of an Aquatic Facility. This position reports to the Aquatic Programmer.

In this role you will:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Grade 12 and completion of a post-secondary certificate program in a related field, plus aquatic leadership experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Sound knowledge of the theory and practices of lifesaving, NLS standards, Water Safety Instructor standards, CPR, first aid, and teaching techniques pertaining to aquatics.
2. Working knowledge of the rules, regulations, administrative practices, procedures, and policies governing the work performed.
3. Sound knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of aquatics and recreation programs.
4. Sound knowledge of programming requirements, aquatic standards, and leadership methods.
5. Working knowledge of pool chemistry, water filtration, chlorinating, heating, and related pool equipment and operating procedures.
6. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, evaluate, and promote programs, services, and events to meet the identified needs and interests of target populations and to provide leadership and instruction on same, as required.
7. Ability to participate in recruitment, training, evaluation, and supervision of staff and volunteers.
8. Ability to assist superior in coordinating and administering aquatic programs at an indoor/outdoor aquatics facility.
9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts and groups, volunteers, program participants, community groups, and members of the public.
10. Ability to lead public relations with facility users.
11. Ability to take initiative, exercise judgement, and to work independently in the development, coordination, and implementation of programs and events.
12. Ability to use a variety of materials and equipment for pool maintenance and facility cleanliness.
13. Ability to act for a superior for short absences and with defined limits.
14. Ability to participate in preparation of program budgets, to monitor expenditures and revenue, and conduct programs within budget allocations and to evaluate, prepare statistics and compile reports on same.
15. Ability to attend to first aid incidents.
16. Ability to prepare oral and written reports, to prepare and maintain correspondence, records, reports, promotional material and to perform related clerical tasks, as required.
17. Ability to assume responsibility for pool operations, as required.
18. Ability to provide on-deck supervision and training of lifeguard/instructor staff and to participate in interviews, testing, orientation, and ongoing mentoring of staff and volunteers.
19. Ability to display sound aquatic skills and to instruct in these skills at standards set by relevant professional societies.
20. Ability to perform duties for extended periods of time.
21. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with staff, public, and user groups.

Lifesaving Society - National Lifeguard (NL) Award – Pool Option
Lifesaving Society – Swim Instructor (SI)
Lifesaving Society – Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) Award
Pool Operator Level 1
CPR, Level C/Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Standard First Aid (SFA)

HOURS OF WORK

This is an auxiliary position with no ongoing regular schedule of hours.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The successful candidate will be required to complete a Police Information Check as a condition of employment. (Note – not required a part of the application process; however, will be required upon consideration for employment).
