As the province’s largest energy provider with more than 100 years of knowledge and experience, we proudly deliver renewable energy, natural gas, electricity and propane to 1.3 million customers.
We're actively seeking new talent to join our mission of delivering a stronger energy future in B.C. As one of BC's Top Employers with a diverse team of over 2,800 employees, we are committed to a safe and inclusive culture where each of us can connect, belong, and grow. Join us, and together, let's shape a brighter future for B.C.
Position Overview
You’re a critical thinker with proven strategic capabilities and track record of confident leadership skills. You thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, welcoming change and adapting effortlessly to shifting priorities. Alongside your meticulous analytical and research abilities, you’re a tactical strategist who leverages deep understanding of government greenhouse gas (GHG), energy and climate change policies to develop actionable, aligned corporate strategies in the energy utility sector. You’re also an effective communicator who builds strong partnerships and relationships through transparency and collaboration.
As the Government Relations and Public Affairs Manager, you’ll support the Public Policy Government Relations team’s efforts to research, analyze and communicate on key public policy matters. You’ll also help raise government and stakeholder awareness of our business and contributions to a decarbonized, resilient and affordable energy system, and secure support for our public policy priorities on essential files.
In this role, you will:
- Develop a solid understanding of the practical implications of energy and climate policy at the local, provincial and federal levels of government.
- Assist in developing and executing government relations plans to advance FortisBC’s zero- and low-carbon solutions for the buildings, industry, and transportation sectors, supporting BC’s climate action goals.
- Educate stakeholders on the challenges and opportunities of energy decarbonization in our province, including educating on FortisBC’s role in B.C.’s clean energy economy.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to develop strategic priorities for climate action outreach and engagement while recommending the appropriate action.
- Lead the analysis and execution of policy-related outreach and engagement on climate policies for the buildings, transportation and industrial sectors to drive value through rate base growth while mitigating risk related to climate policy. Engage with our executives, directors, senior managers, consultants and key stakeholders to ensure alignment and effective communication across business units.
- Collaborate with various departments to ensure the corporate strategy and business planning reports, regulatory filings, and other requirements are met.
- Support relevant regulatory processes by assisting with preparing and submitting regulatory applications and responding to information requests.
- Follow compliance with Federal and Provincial lobbying disclosure requirements.
What it takes:
- A post-secondary degree in business, public administration, political science, or communications and experience in the energy and public sector is preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of the Governments of Canada and B.C., the interplay between levels of government and key stakeholder groups, and familiarity with topical political issues in B.C.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and an ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Confident communications skills complemented by exceptional analytical and research abilities.
Additional Information:
- A valid B.C. driver’s license is required, as travel may be required.
In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.
Our engaging workplace offers a wide range of challenging opportunities, while being safe, inclusive, and diverse. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, while supporting life‑long career development. We also encourage volunteerism and nourish the need to give back to your community.
