Regina, Canada STARS Air Ambulance Full time

Transport Physician

We are currently looking for a Transport Physician at our Regina Base (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service).

Why STARS

At STARS, we come to work every day with a purpose…to save lives. Whether you work in the aircraft or at one of our six bases, everyone at STARS plays a vital role in helping to provide critical care, anywhere. Since flying our first mission in 1985, we have never lost sight of what is most important – our VIPS, or Very Important Patients. Each year, we fly over 3,000 missions, providing world class critical medical care whenever and wherever we are needed, and every team member contributes to helping that VIP. We are a lifeline to the community when time and clinical expertise can make all the difference.

Term

One‑year locum, starting ASAP. This contract may be eligible for a 3‑year contract extension after the locum period.

Anticipated Time Commitment

48 hours/month (call and base/flying time).

Position Summary

The Transport Physician (TP) reports to the STARS Saskatchewan Medical Director and works with a team of highly skilled medical providers specializing in the care of critically ill and injured patients.

Key Areas of Involvement

The TP will be an acute care practitioner (emergency medicine, anesthesia, ICU, trauma surgery) who will work with a Registered Flight Nurse and Critical Care Paramedic either in person or online, to provide high‑quality care and service, which includes rapid‑response assessment, intervention, and safe transport of critically ill or injured patients of all ages from the scene of an accident or during inter‑facility transfer. This service is provided twenty‑four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days per week.

Core Competencies

- STARS TPs facilitate critical care patient transfers in Saskatchewan via both remote consult or by physically attending to patient(s).

- STARS TPs do on average 48 hours of a mix of on‑call and base time/month.

- On‑call can be remote; however, the TP must be able to respond within 15 minutes to a helipad or base and be ready with flight suit, boots and requisite gear.

- All TPs must be available to be reached by cell phone immediately while on call or at base.

- Base days are an expectation for all TPs and require the TP to be physically present for a period of the day shift on Wednesdays if they are the TP on call that day. You must be available to fly on all scene calls and inter‑facility transfers when present at the base. Currently, each TP will be expected to attend a minimum of 1 Base Day per year.

- Phone calls are primarily comprised of inter‑facility transfer requests where the TP ensures that the patient is medically suitable for transport, that the most suitable transport modality is assigned, and that the most appropriate medical expertise accompanies the patient. Scene calls involve the TP when the Air Medical Crew request online consultation from patient side for patient update and management plan or disposition. Complex scene calls (mass casualty incidents) will also require TP consultation and/or presence.

- TPs may periodically need to fly on fixed‑wing flights and use ground ambulances to aid in critical care patient transfers.

- TPs will be required to participate in a process of performance review at regular intervals as a means of supporting continuing learning and effectiveness in the role.

- TPs are also required to provide over the phone medical control for Saskatchewan Air Ambulance when on call and when required.

- Undertake additional duties as required (educational rounds presentations; foundation/charity presentations, attend TP meetings and updates).

Qualifications & Required Experience

- Be an acute care practitioner in emergency medicine, anesthesia, ICU, or trauma surgery.

- Be licensed to practice in Saskatchewan with an active certificate of registration for independent practice and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan.

- Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

- Experience and/or training in pre‑hospital environment and transport medicine will be considered a strong asset.

- Understand Saskatchewan’s critical care and red patient referral transfer systems.

- Demonstrate commitment to quality assurance and quality improvement.

- Have a thorough knowledge of current and new/emerging quality guidelines and standards for critical care transport and pre‑hospital medicine.

- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

- Have a demonstrated track record of leading high‑acuity teams.

- Participate in a process of performance review at regular intervals as a means of supporting continuing learning and effectiveness in the role.

As this position has been identified as safety‑sensitive, employment of the preferred candidate will be conditional upon successful completion of required pre‑employment alcohol and drug assessment.

At STARS, every day we come to work with a purpose, to save lives. When you join STARS, you become part of the community that knows we are stronger together. It takes a team to deliver the highest standards of care, and we need you to help us be our best.

How to apply / Deadline to apply

If you are the person we are looking for and would like to make a difference with your career, please apply by the closing date: January 10, 2026.
