Lunenfeld‑Tanenbaum Research Institute is one of the world’s leading centres in biomedical research. The research activities are focused around understanding the function of human genes and how genetic pathways and environmental factors lead to the development of human diseases. The research programs at Lunenfeld‑Tanenbaum make extensive use of genomics, proteomics and related technologies.

Position Overview

A Bioinformatician position is available at the Lunenfeld‑Tanenbaum Institute with a focus on investigation of the underlying genetic susceptibility factors associated with COVID‑19. This is an excellent opportunity to conduct cutting‑edge bioinformatics research, develop novel methodologies and apply bioinformatics tools in a multidisciplinary setting.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Assist in data management on HPC systems; ensuring genetic data is collected and stored properly and in compliance with data security and access policies
- Use various bioinformatics software tools/platforms to analyze, interpret and visualise genomic sequencing results (e.g. genomic association studies (GWAS))
- Develop, optimise and refactor data processing pipelines such as the gnomAD software framework and validate their performance across multi‑institutional genomic datasets
- Design and develop bioinformatics pipelines that apply genomic research to real‑world problems using public and private data sets, providing software for training, testing, operating and updating existing tools
- Design, develop and contribute to open‑source software that applies genomic research techniques to common problems
- Report and present bioinformatics software outcomes for team efforts, including demos, status and results
- Liaise with internal and external researchers, acting as a point of contact between various teams, departments or research groups to assist with the development of bioinformatics workflows
- Develop project/study protocols and other materials (e.g. questionnaires, data forms), maintain confidential and accurate project records, and ensure standard operating procedures (SOPs) are kept up‑to‑date
- Assist with the overall coordination of a research study or project(s), including coordinating day‑to‑day activities

Skills and Qualifications

- MSc in bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics, data science, computer science or applied health research is preferred
- Minimum of 2 years’ bioinformatics experience
- 1+ year of research coordination experience is considered an asset
- Experience working with genomic sequencing data, bioinformatics, statistics, data science and applied health research
- Experience using HPC systems and job schedulers (e.g. SLURM)
- Experience in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, R, Unix systems (Bash), Java, database technologies (SQL, MongoDB, Neo4j, …), Ruby, etc.
- Experience working with next‑generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis packages and/or pipelines (PLINK, GATK best practices, etc.)
- Experience using at least one of the following containerisation and workflow management systems (e.g. Docker, Singularity, Nextflow, Snakemake, CWL, WDL)
- Familiarity with online software platforms for sharing and interpreting genomic data
- Familiarity with machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and/or statistics is an asset
- Familiarity with cloud‑based computing platforms (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, etc.)
- Excellent communication skills; proficiency in written and spoken English
- Excellent organisational skills, ability to work efficiently and effectively with other staff members

Starting salary: 36.331 per hour
