About us
Capital Accounting operates within Financial Services under the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) portfolio at the University of Toronto. The academic goals and objectives of the University are supported through excellent financial management and the effective stewardship of operating, research, trust, and capital funds within a decentralized financial management model. Capital Accounting plays a critical role in supporting this model by providing expert leadership in complex financial reporting, capital fund oversight, forecasting, and regulatory compliance across the University. The unit leads key year-end, audit, and statutory reporting activities, oversees capital financial accounting and analysis, and provides specialized accounting, tax, and policy advice on complex and non-routine initiatives. Through close collaboration with divisions, senior leadership, auditors, and external partners, Capital Accounting ensures the integrity of financial information, compliance with evolving accounting standards, and informed decision-making in support of the University’s long-term financial sustainability.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Controller and Executive Director, Financial Services, the Associate Director, Financial Services (Capital Accounting) is responsible for providing financial management expertise and advice to the University community. This is accomplished with an in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles for not-for-profit organizations in Canada and advanced knowledge of financial planning and analysis within a University business environment. The incumbent supports strategic initiatives through the preparation of various complex financial analysis and reports and provides advice and guidance to various divisions. The incumbent also recommends financial policy and procedural changes to senior management and implements them in a complex and changing environment. The incumbent also supervises a team of accounting professionals.
Qualifications
Education
- University degree and completion of the CPA designation.
Experience
- Five to eight years of relevant experience in a large, complex organization, preferably in the University sector.
- In-depth knowledge in the area of accounting, finance, financial controls and information systems.
- Solid knowledge of University policies.
- Experience in capital project management and knowledge of the Ontario Construction Lien Act are considered assets.
Skills
- Advanced proficiency with spreadsheet and word-processing software, preferably Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Access is an asset.
- Knowledge of the University's Administrative Management System (AMS), specifically its Financial Information System (FIS) is an asset.
Other
- Strong leadership capability, excellent judgement, ability to interpret and evaluate policy and procedural requirements, analyze data, and demonstrate initiative as well as independent and creative thinking.
- Excellent oral, written, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with multiple priorities and meet short deadlines.
- Strong organizational skills and a high degree of accuracy in work.
