Reporting to: Operations Manager Úllus

Schedule: 28 hours per week, between 8:30am-4:30pm Monday-Friday

Summary of Duties:

The Communications Specialist is responsible for providing communications support to the Líl̓wat Nation. This role requires someone with excellent communication skills and a strong attention to detail. The Communications Specialist will plan, develop and implement strategies and activities to increase public awareness regarding Council initiatives, services, programs, projects and public engagement events through various mediums including website, social media and print materials.

Key Deliverables and Expectations:

1. Develop and disseminate information and promotional material internally and externally including guides, brochures, newsletters, public notices, press releases, and presentations for all communication channels including website, social media and print materials.
2. Utilize the Nation's Communication and Engagement Policy and Framework to ensure alignment with strategic initiatives, guiding principles, community values and cultural practices.
3. Draft and edit communications material (ex. bi-weekly Chiefs & Council briefs).
4. Work with all departments in developing key message strategies and identifying opportunities for proactive media coverage for department programs, services, special events, projects and accomplishments.
5. Liaise with Media and set up times for interviews with authorized spokespeople for the Nation.
6. Update databases and media lists, track projects and media exposure.
7. Manage and track invitations and attend various community events (ex. Annual General Meeting).
8. Seek opportunities for process improvement and optimization.
9. Collaborate and build strong relationships with internal and external partners.
10. Work effectively with external Communications Contractors for large projects.
11. Coordinate the design and purchase of promotional materials (ex. banners).
12. Organize marketing and networking events.
13. Assist with responding to inquiries that come through the website and social media.
14. Perform other related duties as requested.

Experience and Attributes:

1. Communications University degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
2. Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role.
3. Understanding of media relations and digital media strategies.
4. Proficiency in MS Office; familiarity with design software and content management systems is a plus.
5. Exceptional writing, editing, research and project management skills.
6. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English. An understanding of Ucwalmícwts is an asset.
7. An affinity for Líl̓wat language, culture and heritage. Previous experience working with First Nations is an asset.
8. Strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail and time management skills.
9. The ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, manage multiple tasks simultaneously and maintain confidentiality.
10. Motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently as well as an integral member of various teams.
11. Highly professional in all aspects of business, presentation and interaction with all stakeholders, clients, and Members.
12. BC class 5 driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
13. Ability to provide a clear criminal record check, including the vulnerable sector.
