Job Description:

The Max Rady College of Medicine and Shared Health are seeking an individual to provide outstanding leadership for the position of Head of the Department of Surgery, Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba and Provincial Specialty Lead, Surgery, Shared Health commensurate with qualifications and experience for a five-year term commencing September 1, 2025, or as soon thereafter as possible. This opportunity presents the challenge of overseeing a department based on solid foundation of the discipline and innovative models of teaching and research collaboration, and clinical care across the province.

The successful applicant will be, or expected to become, a GFT at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor. A stipend will be provided for the duration of the appointment.

The University of Manitoba, Max Rady College of Medicine, is a major centre of medical education and research linked to sister institutions throughout Canada and the world. It offers a full range of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs. The Department of Surgery provides recruitment, clinical teaching and training and support to undergraduate and postgraduate students, residents, and fellows. Education and training are provided in eight surgical specialties at Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface Hospital.

Shared Health is a Provincial Organization responsible for planning, quality, patient safety, standards, and innovation while ensuring a sustainable cost-effective health care system. The successful candidate will be the lead advisor within Shared Health, working collaboratively with surgical site leaders and subspecialty leaders across the various service delivery organizations on all aspects of surgical care in the province.

The successful candidate will have a substantial record and achievement in Surgery and experience in teaching, research, administrative experience, and leadership involving such activities as faculty mentorship, cross-disciplinary collaborative research, curriculum organization, and participation in the recruitment, appointment and promotion of colleagues. Notable contributions to faculty and university service are desirable and recognition in national and international contexts is expected.

Minimum Requirements:

1. Candidates must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba.
2. Certification in Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent is required.
3. Extensive experience providing patient care as a Surgeon in any clinical setting.
4. Recognized as a clinical surgical leader.
5. Experience in varied clinical settings is preferred.
6. Experience working in multi-professional teams.
