JOB SUMMARY

The AGLC is expanding its Tobacco Enforcement team, with multiple Investigator positions available.

Working within the Tobacco Enforcement Unit (TEU) you will be part of an investigative team conducting investigations into violations of Provincial Statutes and the Criminal Code of Canada.

As a Peace Officer you will be responsible for investigating offences and laying charges for contraventions of the Tobacco Tax Act, Tobacco and Smoking Reduction Act, Fuel Tax Act, Tourism Levy Act, Cannabis Act, and Criminal Code offences as they relate to these Acts. As a member of the TEU you will maintain close working relationships with Alberta Finance, police agencies, Canada Border Services Agency, and other enforcement agencies to develop intelligence, investigate, and charge individuals and corporations involved in the diversion and smuggling of tobacco products. Provide assistance to the illicit Cannabis enforcement team regarding investigations when required.

Work conducted in this unit will be carried out in a team environment. Although seldom, Investigators in this position must be willing to be exposed to tobacco smoke during certain investigations. Additionally, you may be called upon to assist Gaming, Cannabis, and Liquor Peace Officers in their duties.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

- Related post-secondary diploma (e.g. Law enforcement/ Police Studies) or equivalencies.

- Active Peace Officer or Police Officer status or currently working toward certification.

- Minimum 5 years of experience in regulatory inspections and investigations including

- Surveillance and undercover operations

- Open-source investigations

- Preparing judicial authorizations, search warrants, and court briefs

- Case management

- Risk-effective decision making

- Strong understanding of

- Peace Officer Act and Regulations

- Criminal Code case law and legislative interpretation

- Rules of evidence and court procedures

- Investigative techniques and surveillance methods

- Investigative competencies such as Search warrant drafting.

- A valid Alberta Drivers Operator’s License and willingness to travel throughout Alberta, including occasional overnight stays.

- Investigative Skills Education Program (ISEP) 200 or 300 considered an asset.
