Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada ISL Engineering Full time
Job Description

Are you a Junior or Intermediate Bridge Engineer interested in creatively solving the challenging problems that our clients pose? Does a wide variety of work such as bridge inspections, specialty pedestrian bridge design, and difficult construction staging analysis interest you? How about being a part of a strong and growing integrated multidisciplinary design team with lots of opportunity to take on new responsibilities and grow your career? If so, we want to hear from you

ISL is seeking Junior and Intermediate Bridge Engineers to join our expanding transportation structures team in our beautiful Burnaby, BC office. The scope for the role depends on your experience level, but in all cases, the focus will be to continue the growth of ISL's transportation structures engineering services in Western Canada, which vary from standalone bridge design or inspection projects, to coordinated multidisciplinary projects in support of our strong transportation engineering group. Regardless of your experience level, you will be provided with a tight-knit group of dedicated engineers and technicians and a mentoring, motivational, and collaborative environment to thrive.

A few bridge projects we are proud to have worked on:

A Little About Us
At ISL, we share an enthusiasm for community infrastructure. From planning through to design and construction management, we create nimble teams to tackle the unique requirements of every project. In addition to bridges and other structures, our technical expertise encompasses transportation, land use planning, civil engineering, municipal, landscape architecture, heritage services, environmental management, water, community engagement, geomatics, construction services and 3D visualization.

Just the right size, ISL delivers complex projects while being small enough to maintain strong, cohesive project teams and personal client attention and service. When it comes to bridges and other structures, ISL's strongest niches include challenging pedestrian bridge design, particularly those with complicated construction staging or remote access; mass-timber bridges of all styles; the inspection of all kinds of bridge structures, from long-span tied arches to mountain trail bridges at high altitudes; and the retrofit and rehabilitation of bridges, both for seismic and condition purposes.

ISL's team of 550 engineers, technicians, and other professionals works to deliver excellence for our clients, both internal and external. Committed to finding, mentoring, and growing the right individual, our team-focused approach is central to our success:

A Little About You

- Your experience and passion in structural and bridge engineering
- Your activity in school and professional societies
- Why are you interested in working with the ISL team?

Your resume should show us:

- A degree in Civil/Structural/Earthquake Engineering
- A minimum of 2-5 years of progressive bridge engineering experience and responsibility
- Experience with the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA S6:19) and other Canadian design standards and procedures
- Experience with using Canadian provincial bridge engineering standards and specifications
- Experience with using BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (BC MoTI) standards; Alberta Transportation (AT) standards; US standards such as AASHTO, ASCE, and ACI; and Master Municipal Construction Documents (MMCD) Experience in bridge inspection programs or construction supervision assignments
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Bluebeam and engineering software such as SAP2000, CSiBridge, LPile, or XTRACT
- Experience with proposal and report writing, as well as activity in local professional societies
- Master's degree or higher in Structural or Earthquake Engineering

A Little More About the Role
Your projects will primarily originate from the ISL Burnaby office, but you will have the opportunity to be a part of integrated design teams working on multidisciplinary projects across all 15 of the ISL offices.

The range of duties you will perform may include the following depending on the role level:

- Perform design and construction staging of complex mass timber, prestressed and reinforced concrete, aluminum, and steel bridge structures. Experience in pedestrian bridge design and construction, both cable-supported and rigid, is an asset
- Perform advanced structural engineering and analysis tasks, including the performing nonlinear seismic analysis, load rating evaluation, structural retrofit, and rehabilitation of bridges
- Develop designs from conceptual to tender phases and develop engineering drawings, including 3D detailing, with the assistance of our sophisticated CAD and rendering teams
- Conduct quality control activities for independent review and checking of structural designs
- Interface with civil, transportation, electrical, hydrotechnical, and geotechnical engineers, as well as environmental and archeological professionals for the development of complete project plans, specifications, and special provisions, as required
- Develop quantity and expected construction cost estimates in support of plans, specifications, and anticipated scopes of work
- Develop engineering work plans, design criteria, studies, reports, and documentation
- Work together collaboratively as a team with other bridge design engineers, providing mentorship, guidance, assistance, and design supervision of more junior engineers
- Manage projects and clients to ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and with high quality and effectiveness
- Conduct local and potentially remote bridge condition inspections and perform site supervision tasks and contract administration for bridge projects under construction
- Interface with clients, contractors, and subconsultants on a project level and for general relationship and business development purposes
- Contribute to the proposal preparation effort for bridge engineering projects or scopes as needed
