Overview

An externship is an unpaid educational experience. NVA hospitals offer students the opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain hands-on clinical experience. Bowen Veterinary Services is a small boutique clinic on a small, community-minded island in BC. NVA Canada values a supportive environment dedicated to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

Responsibilities

- Work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, and dentistry services.
- Observe/assist or perform surgical procedures and participate in medical management of patients.
- Practice clinical skills and develop communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Eligibility and Duration

- Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules.
- Students in their 4th year or clinical year are encouraged to participate.

Stipend

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. View stipend amounts and details in the stipend program.
