Senior Refrigeration Engineer/Designer

Responsibilities

We are seeking a Senior Refrigeration Engineer/Designer who can design robust refrigeration systems that meet customers’ cooling needs. You will collaborate with sales, engineering, and production teams to:

- Evaluate customers’ processes to determine cooling requirements (load profiles, safety and operability constraints).
- Design complete refrigeration systems and controls strategies that meet customer requirements in real life.
- Support commissioning and troubleshooting in the field to ensure systems perform as designed and root cause issues.

Additional Responsibilities

1. Applications and Sales Support
2. Customer Analysis: Evaluate and understand customer process requirements, operating profiles (continuous vs. batch, pull-down vs. steady load), and constraints.
3. Technical Validation: Verify Sales proposals by performing cooling load, energy balance, and equipment sizing calculations.
4. Bidding Support: Provide technical insight and performance estimates during bidding.
5. System Design: Design skidded or built-up refrigeration systems and process chillers using HFC/HFO and ammonia.
6. Operational Strategy: Define system operating envelopes, setpoints, and capacity-control strategies (VFDs, slide valves, cylinder unloading, etc.).
7. Process Mapping: Develop and review process flows and P&IDs for new systems and major retrofits.

1. Controls and Equipment Operation
2. Controls Narratives: Develop clear controls narratives linking process requirements to system behavior and setpoints.
3. Programming Collaboration: Work with PLC programmers to define sequences of operation, alarm strategies, and interlocks that protect equipment and product.
4. Safety Logic: Provide input to PLC/HMI logic to ensure safe and efficient operation while protecting against misuse.
5. Commissioning Support: Validate design intent, tune control loops, and resolve startup issues to meet customer requirements.

1. Project Execution & Documentation
2. Technical Documentation: Produce/review design reports, datasheets, equipment schedules, and O&M manuals.
3. Design Oversight: Review GA layouts and skid designs with CAD/design teams for serviceability, piping practices, and constructability.
4. Risk Management: Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, risk assessments, and value-engineering sessions.
5. Cross-Functional Support: Provide technical support to project managers, manufacturing, and procurement when design changes are required.

1. Customer Support & Life-Cycle Involvement
2. Root-Cause Analysis: Support the service team with troubleshooting chronic system issues (capacity shortfalls, nuisance trips, oil management, poor pull-down).
3. System Upgrades: Recommend and scope upgrade projects including retrofits, controls upgrades, capacity expansions, and efficiency improvements.
4. Technical Training: Provide occasional training to customer operators and internal teams on refrigeration system operations and best practices.

1. Safety, Codes & Compliance
2. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure designs comply with CSA B52, ASHRAE 15, applicable building/mechanical codes, and provincial requirements.
3. Safety Integration: Include safety devices, relief systems, and operating procedures in every system design.
4. Standardization: Contribute to internal engineering standards and design guidelines.

Qualifications

Must-Have Qualifications:

- Professional Experience: 8+ years in industrial or commercial refrigeration system design, applications engineering, or installation/commissioning support.
- System Design Expertise: Experience designing complete refrigeration systems and integrating with customer processes.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of refrigeration cycles, compressor performance, superheat control, oil management, and controls.
- Drafting & Design Proficiency: Ability to read and produce P&IDs, control narratives, and GA drawings.
- Codes & Compliance: Familiarity with Canadian codes/standards (CSA B52, ASHRAE 15, provincial regulations, ASME B31.3/B31.5).
- Communication Skills: Ability to explain complex concepts to diverse stakeholders.

Nice-to-Have / Assets:

- Professional Designation: Licensed P.Eng. in Ontario.
- Practical Experience: Journeyperson Refrigeration Mechanic or significant hands-on commissioning/service.
- Controls Knowledge: Experience with PLC/HMI platforms and BMS integration.
- Natural Refrigerants: Experience with NH3, CO2 in industrial refrigeration in addition to Freon systems.
- Industry Software: Familiarity with selection tools from major compressor/component manufacturers.
