Job Description
Cochrane is located in the breathtaking Bow Valley corridor in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in southern Alberta. With a population of over 37,000 people, and growing steadily every year, Cochrane is a thriving town, surrounded by world‑famous ranch country. Our western heritage is reflected in the Town’s architecture and our friendly people. The Town of Cochrane welcomes innovative and skilled individuals to join our team of over 250 employees.
Who are we looking for?
Are you a creative storyteller with a passion for community and a knack for connecting people through great communication?
We’re looking for a Communications Advisor (Temporary) to join our collaborative and high‑performing Corporate Communications team.
In this role, you’ll play a key part in shaping how Cochrane connects with its residents, partners, and employees — from developing strategic communication plans to crafting compelling digital content that builds understanding and pride in our community.
Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Communications, you’ll work closely with departments across the organization to plan and deliver communications that enhance civic literacy, strengthen engagement, and celebrate the projects and people that make Cochrane exceptional.
If you’re a curious, motivated professional who can balance hands‑on creative work with strategic thinking — we want to hear from you.
*** This is a temporary position that will commence in January 2026 and will end in January 2027 with the possibility of extension to August 2027 ***
Why build your career with Cochrane?
Cochrane is growing — fast. With growth comes opportunity: to tell powerful stories, engage our community, and help shape the future of one of Alberta’s most vibrant towns.
As part of Cochrane’s Corporate Communications team, you’ll join a group that values creativity, collaboration and integrity. Together, we build awareness, inspire action and ensure residents have clear, consistent and trustworthy information about the Town’s programs and initiatives.
In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to:
- Lead cross‑departmental communication and marketing initiatives that reach thousands of residents.
- Shape Cochrane’s digital presence across social media, web and emerging platforms.
- Strengthen community connection and trust through storytelling, visuals, and clear communication.
- Contribute ideas and strategies that make a lasting impact in a growing and dynamic municipality.
Employees in Corporate Communications enjoy a supportive, innovative work environment where your ideas matter and professional growth is encouraged. In addition to competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits, you’ll gain valuable experience in municipal communications, engagement, and public service.
What makes you a great fit?
- You’re an excellent writer who thrives on crafting messages that inform, inspire, and engage.
- You bring a creative, digital‑first mindset and understand how to tailor content for different audiences and platforms.
- You’re proactive, detail‑oriented and love collaborating across teams.
- You care deeply about community and want your work to make a difference where you live.
What are some of the duties of the Communications Advisor?
- Develop, implement, and evaluate multi‑channel communication strategies that promote Town initiatives, programs, and services.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure communication initiatives align with corporate and departmental priorities.
- Create, manage, and evaluate communication materials and campaigns across digital, print, and media platforms.
- Plan and execute marketing and engagement strategies to support public awareness and Town events.
- Manage and monitor digital communication platforms, including website content, social media channels, and e‑newsletters, ensuring accessibility, brand consistency, and audience engagement.
- Coordinate media relations activities including drafting media releases, preparing key messages, and supporting spokespersons.
- Support internal communication initiatives that foster alignment, engagement, and awareness among employees.
- Contribute to emergency communications and ensure timely, accurate public information during incidents.
- Measure and report on communication effectiveness using digital analytics and performance metrics.
- Plan, coordinate, and facilitate events on behalf of the organization, including internal and external initiatives such as community celebrations, corporate announcements, media events, and staff engagement activities.
- Ensure all written materials and publications adhere to Canadian Press (CP) style and the Town of Cochrane Style Guide.
