Description

The Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) is a leading industry organization dedicated to the overall planning, development, marketing, and management of the commercial port facilities within the Port of Prince Rupert. PRPA is seeking motivated, eager-to-learn students to join the PRPA team and contribute to our ongoing projects and initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop professional skills, and enhance career prospects. The summer student employment is for four months, commencing May 05, 2025, and ending August 29, 2025 (unless specified otherwise in the job ad below).

The following PRPA departments have student positions available:

Maintenance (4 positions)

- The students will assist the Asset Management Department with preventative maintenance activities and work orders. They will also lead the completion of grounds keeping activities, painting, and pressure washing. Field work will include basic maintenance work, inspections, and operating basic maintenance equipment and tools. The students will assist at community events and ensure the 5S program is maintained (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain).
- The students should possess the ability to work safely, good spoken communication skills, a general understanding of Microsoft software and understand and be willing to use small power tools. The students should be enthusiastic, self-motivated, and work well in both unsupervised and supervised situations and in a team environment. The students should also possess a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence and be able to produce a Driver's Abstract when requested.
- Work will predominantly be in the field, with some time spent in an office environment. The positions may require work on vessels and irregular work hours with situational overtime possibilities.

Maintenance Projects (1 position)

- The student will assist the Asset Management Department with ongoing projects and initiatives pertaining to field inspections and review, surveying for assets (i.e. water lines), site visits, and quality control.
- The student should have an interest in asset and project management, with good working knowledge of budgeting, schedules, reporting, and document development utilizing Microsoft Office.
- Health, Safety, & Well-being is looking to hire a student to support a critical project focused on conducting Job Demands Analyses (JDA) for a wide variety of roles across our organization. This work is essential for understanding the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial demands of positions across our organization and for creating documentation that will inform safety practices, recruitment, training, and accommodation strategies.
- The ideal applicant will be a motivated, detail-oriented student who is eager to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting and should possess the following qualifications and skills:
- Field of Study: Currently enrolled in a kinesiology or related program (e.g., ergonomics, occupational health, human factors, exercise science, etc.)
- Familiarity with workplace ergonomics, biomechanics, or occupational health and safety principles is a strong asset.
- Observational Skills: Ability to keenly observe work processes and identify key physical, cognitive, and psychosocial demands associated with specific roles.
- Analytical Skills: Competence in analyzing tasks and breaking them down into measurable components such as strength requirements, posture frequency, and sensory demands.
- Written Communication: Strong ability to create clear, detailed, and structured reports that integrate observations, data, and visuals effectively.
- Verbal Communication: Comfort in engaging with employees to ask questions and clarify job details while building rapport and trust.
- Media Documentation: Basic experience or comfort with capturing and organizing video footage and photographs for documentation purposes.
- Data Organization: Proficiency with tools like Microsoft Word, Excel, or similar software for structuring and presenting findings.
- Knowledge of Ergonomic Assessment Tools: Familiarity with assessment tools such as RULA (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment), REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment), or equivalent is an asset but not required. We have a tool we will guide them through.

Human Resources (1 position)

- The student will work with HR's Operations and Services and Talent teams on various HR programs. In particular, the student provides support in the area of Recruitment & Selection, Human Resources Records Management, Employee Communications, and Employee Reward & Recognition.
- The student should possess strong written and spoken communication skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams, as well as good judgment and tact in dealing with sensitive issues and confidential information. The student should be enthusiastic, self-motivated and like working with people.
- The student's work will be predominantly in an office environment.

Engineering (2 positions)

- The student(s) will assist the Engineering Department in the design, field review and administration of PRPA capital construction projects. Various Engineering projects will be assigned, including but not limited to completing field reconnaissance to confirm the property's physical characteristics (e.g., manual soil probing to measure overburden thickness) and land surveying. Work will include assistance in preparing concept drawings and preliminary budget estimates, and technical reports for future development proposals.
- The students must at minimum, have completed their first year of study in engineering or engineering technology in an accredited University or College and must possess the following qualifications and capabilities:
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, PowerPoint and AutoCAD
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, problem-solving and analytical techniques.
- Basic understanding of land surveying and the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
- Basic knowledge of project management with an ability to organize and prioritize assignments.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Project, Revit and Civil 3D is an advantage.
- Ability to write a Technical Report
- Possess a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence and be able to produce a Driver's Abstract (if requested).
- Ability to move safely around construction sites and undeveloped land, including climbing ladders and performing moderate lifting.
- The students will work both in the field and in an office environment. This position may require occasional irregular work hours.

Communications (1 position)

- The communications team seeks an enthusiastic student who will assist the communications team with various exciting projects for PRPA.
- In this position, the student will support ongoing communication initiatives in copywriting and editing, digital content development, traditional and social media monitoring, website content management, archiving and maintenance of digital assets, marketing collateral development, and communications planning.
- The student should be enrolled in a program at a post-secondary institution studying communications, marketing, public relations, or journalism. Excellent writing skills and attention to detail are a must. A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential, while familiarity with social media platforms, content management systems, and/or creative development software would be considered an asset. Experience with photography, videography, and related editing software is also preferred.
- The student will work primarily in an office environment during regular business hours.
- The students will primarily be involved in the operations of the Port Interpretive Centre (PIC) and The Prince Rupert Visitor Centre (PRVIC). The students will be front-line staff at the PIC and PRVIC and will provide engaging education and tours to visitors about the Port's history, its current operations, and vision for the future. In addition, the students will provide visitor information to guests about Prince Rupert and Northern BC. Other duties may involve community outreach, youth engagement and participation at local events.
- The students must be enrolled in a University or College program. Excellent interpersonal, service and communications skills are required. The students will work primarily in the PIC and PRVIC with some off-site community engagement. This position will require weekend shifts and a rotating work schedule.
- The employment term for the PIC and PRVIC positions commences April 01, 2025 and ends September 30, 2025, with necessary availability from May 01 to August 22, 2025.
- The student will work with the Information Technology Department, reporting to the IT manager on various projects, including configuration and deployment of switches, radios, deployment of new PCs, asset management and front-line user support.
- The student should be enrolled in a technology-based or another related program that utilizes technology. Good writing and communication skills are required. A basic understanding of the following is considered an asset:
- Networking
- Desktop Computer Support
- Microsoft Office application use and support
- The student's work will be split between an office environment and fieldwork, and they should be able to lift up to 50 pounds. This position may require occasional irregular work hours.

Environmental Sustainability (2 positions)

- The students will assist in the various environmental stewardship programs. This includes monitoring and sampling programs with work conducted on a vessel, data collection, reporting and research as well as other tasks as required.
- The students should be enrolled in an undergraduate program in Science, Ecology or Marine Studies in a University or College. Good writing and communication skills are required, and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is an asset.
- The student's work will be split between an office environment and fieldwork. The position will also require working on vessels and may require occasional irregular work hours. The student must be able to lift items of up to 25 pounds.

Government Relations (1 position)

- The Government & External Relations team is looking for a student focused on politics, business, public policy, or public affairs that can assist the team in ongoing external stakeholder engagement. The student will support the team with ongoing government engagement initiatives such as:
- Monitoring, researching, and writing about federal and provincial government bills, policies, announcements.
- Port tours and events with government officials and external stakeholders.
- The student will have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, an interest in Federal and British Columbia politics and/or policy, and experience with writing reports. The student will work primarily in an office environment during regular business hours.

Procurement (1 position)

- The student will work with PRPA's Procurement Department, supporting various procurement initiatives. Tasks will include analyzing data and supporting the documentation of process improvements, while assisting with vendor management, and market research.
- The student should have a strong interest in procurement and finance, gaining hands-on experience in a fast-paced corporate environment.

Legal (1 position)

- The Commercial and Regulatory Affairs legal team is looking for a student to work with the legal team on a broad range of legal, regulatory, and commercial matters. Tasks will include legal drafting, including initial drafts of various types of agreements, legal research, and preparation of documents, including correspondence and memoranda. This opportunity will allow the student to have direct and practical work experience in a fast-paced legal environment.
- The student should be enrolled in law school and possess good writing, research, and communication skills.
- The student will work primarily in an office environment during regular business hours.
