The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Security Lieutenant for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Reporting to the Director of Security Services, this position is responsible for the daily oversight and direct supervision of Security Officers, Community Service Officers, and Executive Drivers.
Key Duties
- The Security Lieutenant provides leadership, supervision, and direction to both full time Security Officers and part-time CSOs.
- The Security Lieutenant is responsible for the recruitment, training, and direct supervision for Security Officers, CSOs, and Executive Drivers, while working to ensure operational needs are met.
- The Security Lieutenant is responsible for staffing and coordinating resources to meet the demand for requests for Security & CSO services.
- Security Lieutenants are responsible for completing compliance reports on the functionality of physical security devices, including panic alarms, safety lighting, and emergency blue light phones.
- Security Lieutenants maintain a dynamic partnership with the Department of Transportation Services to ensure accurate and timely parking enforcement information is disseminated to Security Officers, and to issue corrective measures to Security Officers.
- Security Lieutenants act as the primary liaison between University Public Safety and the Chancellor's Offices for scheduling of transportation services.
- Security Lieutenants act as liaisons between RUPD duty supervision and the security division to ensure proper support and operational continuity between day and night operations.
- In the absence of the Director of Security Services, may serve as the security representative in event planning meetings.
- Promotes a professional environment demonstrating consistency, uniformity, and ensuring adherence to departmental policy and procedure.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related/associated discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- A minimum of 2 years security, military, or law enforcement experience.
Certifications/Licenses
- Valid driver's license, two years of driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving course upon hiring.
- Completion of CPR, First Aid, and AED required upon hiring.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- This position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, and computer literacy.
- This position requires strong organizational skills, critical thinking, and capability of making sound decisions under emergent situations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Email and Calendar functions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous supervisory experience preferred.
- Prior Security experience within a university setting preferred.
- Prior knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
- Experience with cloud-based software such as GoogleDocs.
- Experience with parking enforcement software.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- This position will require the incumbent to work evenings, weekends, and/or overtime.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and be able to stand for long periods of time.
