About this opportunity
The Senior Auditor leads complex joint venture audit engagements, identifying value recovery opportunities, enhancing commercial and operational controls, and providing independent assurance over partner-operated expenditures. This role requires strong audit, analytical, project management, and stakeholder engagement skills to effectively collaborate with internal and external partners across the organization. The successful candidate will deliver actionable insights, drive process improvements, and influence positive business outcomes while maintaining a high standard of audit quality and professionalism. In addition, the role may support broader Internal Audit initiatives and audit engagements as business needs arise. Occasional travel may be required for this position.
What you’ll do
- Lead and execute complex joint venture and contract compliance audits, including planning, fieldwork, analysis, reporting, and follow-up activities.
- Assess expenditures, transactions, and supporting documentation to identify cost recovery opportunities, billing discrepancies, control gaps, and process improvement recommendations.
- Prepare audit notifications, manage information requests, and maintain audit scopes, schedules, and supporting documentation.
- Communicate audit findings and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders, facilitating the timely resolution of issues and alignment on corrective actions.
- Monitor, validate, and support the resolution of audit queries, including process improvements, receipt and payment transactions, and related accounting entries.
- Coordinate and oversee third-party audit service providers, ensuring audit quality, consistency, timely execution, and adherence to Commercial Assurance standards.
- Partner with Legal, Finance, Commercial, and operational teams to support audit inquiries, settlements, disputes, investigations, and other assurance-related matters.
- Contribute to broader assurance initiatives, including technology improvements, risk assessments, Internal Audit support, SOX compliance activities, and continuous improvement efforts. Who you are Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum
requirements:
- Legally authorized to work in Canada
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline required; CPA and/or CAPPA designation is considered an asset.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in joint venture audits, contract compliance audits, operational accounting, or related financial assurance roles within the oil and gas industry.
- Strong understanding of upstream oil and gas operations, with knowledge of midstream and downstream business activities, joint venture structures, and related accounting practices considered an asset.
- Comprehensive knowledge of joint venture accounting, production accounting, commercial agreements, contract interpretation, and industry accounting standards, including EASC guidelines.
- Demonstrated expertise in audit methodologies, risk management, internal controls, and analyzing complex financial, operational, and contractual data to identify risks, recoveries, and process improvement opportunities.
- Proficiency with industry systems and tools such as SAP, EnergyLink, StackDX, CS Land Explorer, Microsoft Office, and similar platforms.
